"Who will care for our adult children, after us?"
A question that haunts all parents of persons with disabilities having high support needs. A tough question, with no easy answers.
While families grapple with putting in place arrangements for long-term care; we at CanBridge help prepare our youngsters for a life in the community, with all the requisite support.
What does this look like? Join us, as we explore the whole theme of preparation for Supported Living in the next series of posts.

We couldn't be more grateful. The exhibition of art works of our youngsters drew so much support that we are almost sold out. If you would like to buy one of the remaining 3 paintings or sponsor one of them for donation to a hospital, pl do DM us. Thank you!

That the arts have a profound impact on young autistic adults is amply borne out by our experience over the last few years.
When a new students walks in, we usually start by introducing different art forms along with some perennial favourites like cooking. The first few weeks of art exploration tell us which is the preferred art form for each individual.
And then the magic begins. Engaging with the preferred art form helps the individual feel at home with the new space and new people. Slowly but surely connections are established between them and the space, the art form, the facilitator and slowly each other.
The Arts become the receptacle for their emotions - a release for some, an immersion for others. And for all, a forever friend.

The most critical determinant of whether the art that is created in our space is an authentic and
natural expression of the artist is not materials, though that is important; but the facilitation and
the environment in which the art-making takes place.
Creating an environment conducive to authentic art-making often challenges our own beliefs about our role. Schooled as we are to direct, it is very difficult to step back, create conditions for good art-making and let the process unfold. Are we able to hold back that, “Wow, that’s looking great” or “You sang beautifully"? - statements which, though positive, convey our approval instead of respect and acceptance for whatever they create.
For the young people we work with, for the most part, it is the process of art-making which is paramount, which fulfills them, satisfying some need within. The product is but an end result, often achingly beautiful, but a bonus nevertheless.
Rahul Manoj, our photography mentor captures the essence of facilitation when he says, “As a facilitator, my approach has been to meet them where they are - sometimes guiding, sometimes stepping back - but always trying to create a space where they could find photography, rather than have it imposed upon them”.

Sometimes it's easier to define who you are by understanding who you are not!
At CanBridge, we place a premium on using the arts to unlock the inherent, natural creativity of the autistic individual. We try to always be mindful of the fact that our task is to draw out what lies within; it is after all their art, their form of expression.
With each one of our youngsters, exploratory forays into different art forms - music, movement, visual art, photography - slowly segue into a distinct preference manifesting itself.
Art becomes a way of communicating and expressing what they are feeling and thinking. One of them tells us how he is feeling that day by the way he plays the xylophone - feeling energetic produces fast-paced rhythms; a slow day means a much gentler pace. Another tells us what’s occupying his mind by choosing to draw it. Yet another, by singing a melody, on loop.
We try to tune in and listen, deeply.
