Architects of Safe Spaces!

Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) prevention programs largely are child-focused education that aim to teach children how to identify, avoid, and disclose sexual abuse.

Absolutely necessary education, no doubt.

However, CSA prevention to be wholesome and effective needs to focus on prevention strategies targeting various levels of a child’s ecology, before taking the same to the Child.

And that is the aim of Primary prevention strategies of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) - preventing abuse from occurring in the first place by reaching out to universal / general population comprising potential victims and perpetrators while treating it as a public health issue that could affect anybody and everybody.

It was indeed a heartening moment when a firm of Architects reached out for a session for their young team of architects and designers. A classic case of primary prevention.

This opportunity turned out to be an enriching experience with the young teams’ active participation in the conversation around the dynamics of CSA.

Yet another Primary prevention program at Anna Institute of Management for senior staff from various government departments.

Despite the gloom cast by the heavy showers and the session scheduled post lunch (!) it turned out to be a very Interactive and engaging session.

Participants from the TN Education department and ICDS ( Integrated Child Development services)added value to the program.

After a long hiatus getting back to work at a school adopted by Care and Welfare Foundation with a session on Child Sexual Abuse awareness and Prevention program for the Teachers' and parents' of the school.
This will be followed with Personal safety Program for children in the coming months.
As always any session done in Tamizh has lot of interactive moments and participation.
A small school with just 5 classes and humble resources compensated with an abundance of Neem , Banyan trees, Cow shed , a man made pond and plenty of non- concreted open space with 5 litters of joy in different shades!
This is the school where we convinced the management to shift to unisex Tracks and Tees for both boys and girls from conservative Pinofer for girls and trousers and shirts for boys.
It was indeed heartening to see the girls very much at ease and comfortable in the functional, non discriminatory clothing.

The recent tragic , unpardonable r**e and murder of a medical professional ..reminded me of this case in 2012 and many other in-between..

Nothing has changed...sadly even in a decade.

Hope the recent invident doesn't become yet another statistic..

‘To Kill a Tiger’ documentary review: Courageous story undone by superficial and over the top treatment While Nisha Pahuja’s documentary gives some understanding of the travails of a family and survivor of child sexual violence navigating the justice system, the treatment of these aspects is very trite and superficial
