Venkata Mukhi Swami of 17th century is the grand theorist of Carnatic music. He was the one who developed the melakarta system. This is the system for classifying south Indian ragas into Melakartha ragas and Janya ragas.

Purandardas (1480-1564) is considered to be the father of Carnatic music. He is the one who structured the method of lessons in Carnatic music. He is also credited with creation of several thousand songs.

Due to Persian and Islamic influences in Northern India from the 12th century onwards, the Indian classical music began to diverge into two distinct styles — Hindustani music and Carnatic music. Carnatic music remained relatively unaffected by Persian and Arabic influences.
Trinity of Carnatic music:
Tyagarajar, Muthuswami Diksh*tar and Syama Sastri are considered as the Trinity of Carnatic music or the Three Jewels of Carnatic music in the 18th century. Their compositions brought a very big change and revolutionised the way carnatic music was treated before. All three composers were born in Thiruvarur, formerly part of Thanjavur District in Tamil nadu.
