BTS: Showing our faces 😁
In these 5 years we haven’t properly introduced ourselves, so hey! – this is Me (Anjana) and Soundaryan in the picture here. This was taken on March 30th 2017, the day we actually went with our first design to our artisans and made our first product sample – Bhumi -Terracotta Water bottle. Honestly, we don’t look like this now (5 years back, that innocence still left on our faces not knowing the rollercoaster journey we have signed up for 😋). However, we thought this would be the ideal picture to show ourselves. The first excitement, the beginning towards our entrepreneurial journey 💫
Sound and myself are friends from college and both of us did our Architecture degree from School of Architecture and Planning, Chennai. So design was going to play an important role throughout our lives. When we started out, both of us had polar opposite ideas for Wallistry which clashed a lot during the very initial meetings, which made us both rethink on our partnership (the thoughts we confessed months later🥲). As designers, this was the typical ego clash as to whose idea was better, whose idea has to be executed. But all this came to a halt at one of our meetings at CCD (our initial workspace) which circled us back to the question – why do we even have to design products in the first place? It was a spark in the moment, to bring a functional alternative to terracotta and the first place to start with was – hydration 💧
You see, we were designers and we had no prior understanding of business or let alone how to run one. So the structured way of starting with a business plan, strategy, customer segmentation, marketing etc. was something that we were not aware of back then. We had an idea, a broader vision and we executed it by bringing in a range of products. We took the journey as it came slowly, sold through stalls, word of mouth and started learning how to run the business through the trial and error process along the way (we still do).
And about the ego part, the moment we saw our design come to life and that our vision finally aligned (to design products that help build a healthier lifestyle), we understood each other’s strengths and weaknesses and gave ourselves designated roles in the company. I took care of handling calls, speaking to customers, vendors and operations while Soundaryan who was and is still the creative guy since college took care of creatives - design, photographs and making sure we stay relevant with our aesthetics, material choices and functionality with time. We do have our disagreements but we clearly respect each other’s boundaries and let each of us do our job.
This is not an inspiration or how to run a small business post. It was a long pending one and we are here showing our faces finally to our 13k family on Instagram (both of us are introverts, you can now see why we have always been BTS).
We are grateful to having you travelling with us through this journey.
A big thank you, guys.
