A planet nearly 48 light-years away has reached a major milestone in astronomy.

Scientists have confirmed that LHS 1140 b possesses an atmosphere, the first confirmed atmospheric detection on a rocky planet located within the habitable zone of another star.

The evidence comes from helium escaping into space, proving the planet has retained an atmosphere. While this doesn't mean the planet is inhabited, an atmosphere is one of the key ingredients scientists look for when assessing whether a world could support life.

This discovery marks an important step toward finding Earth-like planets beyond our Solar System.

Magnetars have magnetic fields of up to 100 trillion gauss (≈10¹¹ tesla), the strongest known in the Universe.
