During World War I (1914–1918), Mahatma Gandhi openly supported the British war effort. • Gandhi encouraged Indians to assist Britain, including recruitment, believing loyal service would earn India political concessions after the war • He framed support as a moral duty, even while India remained unfree At the same time, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak took a different political line. • Tilak argued that Britain’s preoccupation with a global war weakened imperial control • He saw the war period as an opportunity to press aggressively for Swarajya, not blind loyalty • This thinking fed into the Home Rule movement (1916), demanding self-government during the war, not after it The human cost India paid • Over 1.3 million Indians served in the British Indian Army across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East • More than 74,000 Indian soldiers were killed • Tens of thousands more were wounded or permanently disabled • India had no say in the war, but paid in blood, taxes, and grain Britain fought for its empire. India fought for a promise. One leader backed that promise. Another believed pressure — not loyalty — wins freedom.
