"A class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals and in intellect."

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

I. The Great Economic Drain: The $45 Trillion Theft
The most staggering aspect of British rule was the "Drain of Wealth." Economist Utsa Patnaik (Columbia University Press) published research estimating that Britain drained a total of nearly $45 trillion (in today’s value) from India between 1765 and 1938.
The Mechanism of Theft:
Tax & Buy Back: Before 1765, Britain paid for Indian textiles and spices with silver. After the Battle of Plassey (1757) and gaining the Diwani (tax rights) of Bengal, the East India Company (EIC) stopped bringing funds. Instead, they used the taxes collected from Indian peasants to buy Indian goods for export. Effectively, Indians were paying for their own exports.
Home Charges: A massive portion of India's revenue was sent to England to pay for the "India Office" in London, pensions for British officials, and wars fought by the British army outside India.
Council Bills: British traders wanted Indian goods but didn't pay in gold/silver. They paid in "Council Bills" (issued by the British government), which were reimbursed from Indian tax revenues.
II. Destruction of Industries & Agriculture:
The British policy was famously described as turning India into a "supplier of raw materials and a consumer of finished goods."
1. De-industrialization (Textiles & Steel)
Textiles: Prior to British rule, India commanded nearly 25% of the global economy, largely due to textiles. The British imposed tariffs of 70-80% on Indian textiles in Britain while forcing India to accept British machine-made cloth duty-free. This decimated the weavers of Bengal and Dhaka (famous for Muslin).
Fact: Lord William Bentinck famously noted in the 1830s, "The bones of the cotton weavers are bleaching the plains of India."
Shipbuilding & Steel: The British banned Indian ships from carrying goods to Europe to protect British shipbuilders. Later, regulations were put in place to stifle the nascent Indian steel industry (Tata Steel faced immense hurdles).
2. Agriculture & Artificial Famines
Forced Cash Crops: Farmers were forced to grow Indigo (for dye) and O***m (for trade with China) instead of food grains. This left the land infertile and the granaries empty.
3. Famines: The shift from food crops to cash crops, combined with high taxes, led to horrific famines.
Great Bengal Famine (1770): Wiped out 1/3rd of the population (approx. 10 million people). The EIC actually increased tax collection during the famine.
4. Great Famine of 1876–1878: While millions starved in Madras and Mysore, Viceroy Lytton exported a record 320,000 tons of wheat to England.
Bengal Famine (1943): Resulted in 3-4 million deaths. Prime Minister Winston Churchill diverted food supplies from starving Bengal to well-stocked European reserves, stating, "I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion."
III. Looting of Mandirs, Deities, and Artifacts:
The looting extended beyond money to physical treasures, religious idols, and cultural heritage.
* Temple Wealth:
British "Prize Agents" were officially appointed after battles to value and auction loot.
* Srirangapatna (1799): After defeating Tipu Sultan, the British looted the treasury, which contained centuries of wealth including gold, jewelry, and arms.
* Golden Temple (Amritsar): Though not destroyed, the British annexed the Koh-i-Noor diamond from the Sikh Empire (Maharaja Duleep Singh) in 1849.
* Stolen Deities & Artifacts:
The Koh-i-Noor: Taken from the 10-year-old Maharaja Duleep Singh and presented to Queen Victoria. It currently sits in the Tower of London.
* The Sultanganj Buddha: A massive 2.3-meter copper Buddha statue (dated 500-700 AD) was discovered in Bihar in 1861 and shipped to Birmingham Museum, where it remains.
* Amaravati Marbles: Exquisite limestone sculptures from the Satavahana period were removed from Andhra Pradesh and are now in the British Museum.
* Nassak Diamond: Originally adorned the idol of Shiva in the Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple (Nashik). It was looted during the Anglo-Maratha wars.
IV. Destruction of Sanatan Culture & Education
The destruction of culture was psychological and institutional, famously articulated by Thomas Babington Macaulay.
* Macaulay’s Minute (1835): Macaulay argued for the replacement of traditional Indian education (Gurukuls) with English education. His goal was to create
"A class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals and in intellect."
The Educational Shift: The British funding for traditional Sanskrit and Persian learning was cut. Literacy rates, which were reportedly high in traditional village systems (according to historians like Dharampal in The Beautiful Tree), plummeted as indigenous schools were defunded and English schools were restricted to the elite.
Battle of Plassey: Marks the start of the "Drain of Wealth." Robert Clive takes £2.5 million (huge sum then) from Bengal's treasury for the EIC.
1770 Bengal Famine: 10 million die; EIC raises taxes. Policies prioritize revenue over life.
1799 Fall of Srirangapatna: Massive looting of the Mysore treasury; gold, jewels, and manuscripts shipped to England.
1835 English Education Act: Implementation of Macaulay's system; dismantling of Gurukuls.
1849 Annexation of Punjab: The Koh-i-Noor diamond and the erratic "Timur Ruby" are taken by the British.
1857 Sepoy Mutiny (First War of Independence): Brutal suppression led to the looting of Delhi. The Nadir Shah throne and Mughal treasury remnants were taken.
1878 Vernacular Press Act: Crushed local language newspapers to suppress Indian cultural & political expression.
1919 Jallianwala Bagh Massacre: While a loss of life, it symbolized the total disregard for Indian humanity. Thousands of innocent unarmed Indians were trapped and brutally killed by firing rifles repeatedly by Britishers !
1943 Bengal Famine: 3-4 million Indians died due to Churchill’s "scorched earth" policy and food diversion.
