🇮🇳 Happy Republic Day to all 🇮🇳

India celebrated its 77th Republic Day on Monday, January 26, 2026. The main celebrations were held at Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath) in New Delhi, marked by a grand parade showcasing the country's military prowess and cultural diversity.

Key highlights of the Republic Day 2026 celebrations:

1. Chief Guests: For the first time, two leaders from the European Union were invited as chief guests:

(I) Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission

(II) António Costa, President of the European Council

2. Theme: The central theme of this year's parade was "150 Years of Vande Mataram", commemorating the 150th anniversary of India's national song composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.

The Beating Retreat Ceremony, which marks the end of the Republic Day celebrations, was scheduled for January 29, 2026, at Vijay Chowk.

📜 Why was 26th January chosen?

The date 26 January holds deep historical significance. On 26 January 1930, the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) at the Lahore Session, rejecting dominion status under British rule. To honour this historic assertion of sovereignty, the makers of the Constitution deliberately chose 26 January 1950 as the day India would formally become a Republic.

What it marks: Freedom from British rule (1947)

Main celebration: Red Fort, Delhi

Flag ceremony: Flag hoisting

What it marks: Adoption of the Constitution (1950)

Who unfurls the flag: President of India (Head of the State)

Focus: Constitution, democracy, and national unity

In essence, Independence Day celebrates freedom achieved, while Republic Day celebrates freedom governed by law.

Kolkata Metro New Route Inauguration

On August 22, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated three new metro stretches in Kolkata:

Green Line: Sealdah to Esplanade (2.45 km)—completing the East–West Metro link and connecting Howrah to Sector V.

Yellow Line: Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar (Airport) (6.77 km)—establishing the first direct metro link to Kolkata Airport.

Orange Line (Phase II): Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby) to Beleghata (4.4 km)—improving connectivity in South-East Kolkata.

A new subway at Howrah Metro Station was also inaugurated concurrently.

As of January 2025, India’s operational metro rail network surpassed 1,000 kilometers, securing its position as the third-largest globally after China and USA.
