A lever in physics is a simple machine that helps you lift or move objects more easily by using a rigid bar that pivots around a fixed point.
Key parts of a lever
Fulcrum: the fixed pivot point
Effort (input force): the force you apply
Load (output force): the object or resistance being moved
How a lever works
A lever multiplies force depending on where the effort is applied relative to the fulcrum. The farther your effort is from the fulcrum, the easier it is to move the load.
This idea is based on torque (moment of force):
Three classes of levers
1. First-class lever
Fulcrum is between effort and load
Can change direction of force
Example: seesaw
2. Second-class lever
Load is between fulcrum and effort
Always increases force
Example: wheelbarrow
3. Third-class lever
Effort is between fulcrum and load
Increases speed and distance (not force)
Example: human arm lifting a weight
Everyday examples
Crowbar → lifts heavy objects
Scissors → cut materials
Bottle opener → removes caps
Your arm → moves objects using muscles
Why levers are important
Levers make work easier by:
Reducing the force needed
Changing the direction of force
Increasing speed or distance of motion
