AI in admissions: not the villain, not the hero- just the new teammate.
Virginia Tech’s thoughtful use of AI alongside human readers signals a shift toward faster, fairer, more consistent decisions. When done transparently and responsibly, tech can support judgment, not replace it. That’s progress worth watching. Sharing this (plus a couple of links) because it’s an important shift every student, parent, and counselor should understand.

Every application cycle, I notice something interesting. For most of my undergrads, I copy one or both parents on email communication. Parents are in it for the visibility, structure and reassurance.

But, every year, there are a few students who ask for something different: “Can I handle the communication myself?”
And they do! No missed task deadlines, not a single late reply, or moms calling me in last-minute panic!
They manage school, applications, hobbies, and a life, without burning out and without parents hovering in CC.

So what’s different? There is no magic organizing hack, nor are they ‘extra smart’. The secret is INTENTIONALITY. Every part of their application, school and life is built intentionally.

Here’s what makes it work for both parents and students:

1. Control OUT, Clarity IN:
Students who do well independently understand why they’re doing what they’re doing. Parents shift from “Did you do this?” to “Do you know what comes next?”

2. Systems > Reminders:
These students have calendars set in place, share their tracker locations, and participate in our weekly planning meetings. With this, the constant nudging stops and independence grows.

3. Ownership is taught, not expected:
Students are encouraged to reply to emails, ask questions, and flag concerns early. Yes, small mistakes happen but with room to correct and improve, there is no worry at all (for parents 😉)

4. Check-Ins REPLACE Check-Ups:
My weekly “How’s it going?” has worked better than daily monitoring. I have seen trust, building accountability faster than pressure ever will.

5. We love and agree on our ROLES:
When counsellor, parent, and student are aligned on who owns what, things move smoothly. Clear roles create confidence and reduce anxiety.

The goal was never to remove parents from the process. But, to raise students who can segue the process smoothly.
As we all can agree, college applications are not just about getting in. They’re a rehearsal for when the child is alone at college, trying to juggle classes, labs, assignments and the whole works, seamlessly, minus the anxiety.

Too many students start with rankings. That’s not where your shortlist should begin.
What you study, who you learn from, and the kind of support you get after: those are the real game-changers.
This reel walks you through 3 things I always ask students to think about before they build their list.
Simple, practical, and actually helpful.
Grad school choices are personal. Let’s make them intentional.

From College Dreams to Colorado Trails: Aman’s Story
Life after college isn't just about jobs and degrees—it's also about what keeps you grounded.

Aman, now a Data Scientist at a Texas-based startup, has found his balance amidst the mountains of Colorado and the basketball courts that became his sanctuary.

His biggest takeaway?
“Having a passion outside academics is grounding—it adds immense value to the college experience.”

And if he could talk to his younger self?
He’d say: "Yes, be grateful for the U.S. opportunity, but don’t let that gratitude become pressure. Embrace the discomfort, because that’s where the real growth happens."

Let that sink in.

This is part of our series—real stories from students I’ve had the joy of mentoring, as they continue their journeys beyond the admit.

Follow for more such inspiring reflections from the CollegeBound community.

Your story is already impressive, you just need to see it for what it is.Meet Karthik and Vinisha to understand the difference. And if you’re serious about applying for a business major, start with what’s real, not what’s recent.CollegeBound Experts [entrepreneurship, business major, passion project, college application, extracurricular activities, tutoring, student-led initiative, authenticity, personal growth, admissions tips]

CS Aspirants, listen up!
You know, starting a coding club just a month before applications because someone told you colleges like “leadership”, won’t help you!
Let’s be real, admissions officers can spot a last-minute project from a mile away.
Just remember, it’s not about the biggest project. It’s always about the most honest one.
If you’ve been playing around with Python, building tiny bots, or solving logic puzzles just for fun, THAT’S your real story.
Start there. Use it. Build from it.
