Careers do not always stall from lack of capability. Sometimes, they stall while you wait for confidence.

Simon Newman makes an important distinction: you do not need to feel completely confident before taking a bigger step. You need to be willing to move without knowing exactly how it will end.

He calls it a “leap into the dark.”

For capable professionals, the real risk is not always taking the wrong step. It is staying where you are because certainty never arrived.

Simon took that leap himself. And in his experience, when strong capability is already there, it works out well more often than not.

Capability gets you to the edge. Willingness decides whether you cross it.

Sometimes, the version of you that feels “too much” is still holding back.

Simon Newman once received a piece of feedback that didn’t sound small to him:

Be a little more demanding.

When that isn’t naturally how you operate, even a small shift can feel uncomfortable. You start wondering whether you’re becoming too forceful, too direct, or simply unlike yourself.

Then came the advice that stayed with him:

“What you think is very extreme will just be one notch up.”

That distinction matters.

Because we often judge ourselves from our own starting point.

So speaking more firmly can feel aggressive.
Asking clearly can feel demanding.
Holding your ground can feel extreme.

But to everyone else, the change may not look extreme at all.

You may have simply moved one notch beyond the place where you usually hold yourself back.🎯

The work was still there. The oxygen wasn’t.

Simon Newman remembers the moment his boss told him that the next 6–12 months would simply be about “grinding it out.”

Nothing had gone wrong.

But for someone energised by change, building and creating what’s next, hearing that felt like half the oxygen had been taken out of the room.
