If you submitted a manuscript in 2026 the same way you did in 2021, you may already be at a disadvantage before a single reviewer reads your work.
Peer review hasn't been abolished. But the conditions around it have shifted in ways most researchers aren't accounting for.
Submission volumes have surged. Reviewers are handling more papers with less time per manuscript. The desk rejection threshold has risen quietly. AI has made editors suspicious of writing that lacks precision and specificity even when no AI was involved. And the reproducibility debate has changed what reviewers flag in your methods section, whether you realise it or not.
None of this means your research isn't good enough.
It means your manuscript needs to be built for the reviewer who will read it in 2026 not the one from three years ago.
The carousel above breaks down the four specific shifts and what each one means for your submission. If any of them sound familiar, it may be worth a conversation before you click submit.

What does an editor notice before sending a paper out for review?
Usually, not everything. Just enough.
Enough to judge whether the paper fits the journal.
Enough to see whether the contribution is clear.
Enough to feel whether the manuscript is organised and readable.
Enough to decide whether sending it to reviewers is worth the time.
That is why ‘almost ready’ is risky.
Before submission, ask:
• Is the journal fit obvious?
• Is the contribution visible in the title and abstract?
• Does the structure feel controlled?
• Are there any avoidable presentation issues left?
If the answer is still uncertain, it is better to check now than lose weeks after submission.

Trust cannot be automated.
AI creates a "veneer of authority," but it cannot critically evaluate truth or originality. Relying on it as a shortcut risks overlooking fundamental flaws in research. The reviewer signs.
The editor signs. AI signs nothing. Responsibility for quality remains firmly with human experts. Let's keep peer review human-led.Follow for more updates on the future of science

Publishing is accelerating.
AI can refine language in seconds.
Submissions are cleaner than ever.
But verification hasn’t accelerated at the same rate.
When confidence can be generated on demand,
the real question becomes:
what are we actually reviewing?
A short reflection on where this shift is taking us.
