It’s not 20 mins on one breast and 20 mins on the other breast. Because this can differ from baby to baby and also based on the amount of milk present in the breast. Instead, look into the suckling pattern of the baby.
When the latch is deep, you can see jaw dropping suckling with a rhythmic suckling pattern - equal time of suckling and rest phase in alteration. When the baby starts to suckle lesser but break longer or if the baby fusses at breast pulling the ni**le, then the baby probably has drained the breast. This is when you switch if baby demands more.

What makes the baby sleep, most term babies will actively breastfeed and will release from the breast when done. But if you keep finding your newborn sleeping at the breast all the time, waking up is not the solution. Mostly accompanied by painful breastfeeding.
Your baby is probably not transferring enough milk out of the breast due to shallow latching. When milk transfer isn’t there, the baby sleeps but is never full. Yes, even if its an hour of breastfeeding, shallow latch wouldn’t let baby receive enough milk. Mothers usually think milk is not enough.
The solution lies in latching deep, making the baby get a lot of ar**la in mouth. The you can have comfortable breastfeeding and happy baby after feeds.
