Class 12 English Poetry Short Stories Chapter 2 An Astrologer’s Day
STORY at a Glance

Once in a town on a busy crossing an astrologer used to sit under a tamarind tree from morning till evening. He was so dressed and with all his equipments spread before him that the people were attracted towards him in a large number. He also answered their questions in such a way that most of them were satisfied. One evening when the astrologer was ready to go home, a man came to him and pressured him to answer his questions. Under the pressure of his client he had to answer his questions. As soon as the man lit his cigar, the astrologer caught a glimpse of his face by the matchlight. The astrologer felt uncomfortable yet he gathered courage.

The man said, “Shall I succeed in my present search ?” The astrologer said, “You were left for dead. Am I right ?” “Ah, tell me more.” “A knife has passed through you.once ?” said the astrologer. “Good fellow !” He bared his chest to show the scar. “What else ?” “And then you were pushed into a well near by in the field. You were left for dead.” “I should have been dead if some passer-by had not chanced to peep into the well.” exclaimed the other overwhelmed by enthusiasm. “When shall I get at him ?” he asked, clenching his fist. “In the next world,” answered the astrologer. “He died four months ago irrä far off town. You will never see any more of him.” The other groaned on hearing it. The astrologer proceeded.” “Guru Nayak….”5.30g! WET “You know my name also ! the other said in a surprise.”

“I know everything, Guru Nayak. Listen to me carefully. Your village is two days journey in the north. Take the next train and go away. There is a danger to your life if you go away from home. Take this sacred ash and rub it on your forehead and go home. Never travel southward again.” The astrologer also told him that his enemy was crushed under a lorry and died. Hearing this the man was delighted. He gave the astrologer a handful of coins and went away. Now it was too late. The astrologer picked up his articles and reached home. His wife was waiting for him anxiously. After dinner he told her the whole story how he misguided his enemy and assured him that his enemy was not alive. So, he left his search. In this way from that day he was the most carefree man.

कहानी पर एक दृष्टि

एक बार एक नगर में एक ज्योतिषी इमली के पेड़ के नीचे एक व्यस्त चौराहे पर सवेरे से शाम तक बैठा करता था। वह ऐसे वस्त्र पहनता था और अपना सारा सामान अपने सामने इस प्रकार फैला लेता था कि बड़ी :संख्या में लोग उसकी ओर आकर्षित होते थे। वह उनके अधिकांश प्रश्नों के उत्तर भी इस प्रकार देता था कि उनमें से अधिकांश सन्तुष्ट हो जाते थे। एक दिन शाम को जब ज्योतिषी घर जाने को तैयार था, तब एक आदमी उसके पास आया और अपने प्रश्नों के उत्तर देने के लिए उस पर दबाव डाला। अपने ग्राहक के दबाव में उसके प्रश्नों के उत्तर उसे देने पड़े। ज्योंही उस व्यक्ति ने अपना सिगार जलाया, माचिस की रोशनी में ज्योतिषी ने उस व्यक्ति के चेहरे की झलक देखी। ज्योतिषी परेशान हो गया किन्तु उसने साहस बटोरी। उस व्यक्ति ने कहा, “क्या मैं अपनी वर्तमान तलाश में सफल होऊँगा या नहीं ?” ज्योतिषी ने कहा, “तुम मृतप्रायः छोड़ दिए गए थे। क्या मैं ठीक हूँ?.

अरे, मुझे कुछ और बताओ।” एक बार तुम्हारे ऊपर चाकू से वार हुआ।” ज्योतिषी ने कहा। अच्छे व्यक्ति,” उसने अपने घाव दिखाने के लिए छाती खोली। और भी कुछ ?” और फिर तुम्हें खेत में पास के कुएँ में धकेल दिया गया। तुम्हें मृतप्रायः छोड़ा गया।” यदि कुछ व्यक्ति जो उस रास्ते से जा रहे थे कुएँ में न झाँकते तो मैं मर गया होता।’ दूसरा व्यक्ति चिल्लाया। वह आदमी जोश में भर गया। अपनी मुट्ठी मारते हुए उसने पूछा, “मैं उसे कब पकड़ पाऊँगा ?”अगले संसार में,” ज्योतिषी ने उत्तर दिया, “वह चार महीने पूर्व एक दूर के नगर में मर गया। तुम उसे अब कभी नहीं देख पाओगे।’ यह सुनकर दूसरा व्यक्ति गुर्राया। ज्योतिषी ने आगे कहा— गुरु नायक !”

आप मेरा नाम भी जानते हो।’ दूसरे व्यक्ति ने आश्चर्य से कहा।। “ऐ गुरु नायक, मैं सभी कुछ जानता हूँ। मेरी बात ध्यान से सुनो। तुम्हारा गाँव उत्तर की ओर है। यात्रा में दो दिन लगते हैं। अगली गाड़ी पकड़ो और यहाँ से चले जाओ। यदि तुम घर से बाहर जाओगे तब तुम्हारे जीवन को खतरा है। यह पवित्र राख लो और इसे अपने माथे पर मलो और घर जाओ। दक्षिण की ओर पुनः यात्रा मत करना।” ज्योतिषी ने यह भी बताया कि उसका शत्रु एक लॉरी के नीचे कुचल गया और मर गया। यह सुनकर वह व्यक्ति बहुत प्रसन्न हुआ। उसने ज्योतिषी को एक मुट्ठी भर सिक्के दे दिए और चला गया। अब बहुत देर हो गई थी। ज्योतिषी ने अपना सामान उठाया और घर पहुँच गया। उसकी पत्नी उत्सुकता से उसकी प्रतीक्षा कर रही थी। रात्रि भोजन के बाद उसने उसे पूरी कहानी सुना दी कि किस प्रकार उसने अपने दुश्मन को बहकाया और उसे विश्वास दिला दिया कि उसका दुश्मन जीवित नहीं है। इसलिए उसने अपनी तलाश छोड़ दी। इस प्रकार उस दिन से वह अत्यन्त निश्चिन्त व्यक्ति था।

(यह ज्योतिषी एक किसान का बेटा था। उसने एक व्यक्ति की हत्या कर दी थी। अतः वह एक अपराधी था। इसलिए उसने बिना किसी को बताए हुए अपना घर छोड़ दिया।)

Answer.
He chose this profession so that he might not be traced out by his enemy.
(उसने यह व्यवसाय इसलिए चुना ताकि उसका दुश्मन उसका पता न लगा सके।)

Answer.
He chose a place near a busy crossing under a tamarind tree. It was a suitable place because the people of all trades passed by that way.
(उसने एक व्यस्त चौराहे के पास इमली के पेड़ के नीचे एक स्थान चुना। यह उपयुक्त स्थान था क्योंकि सभी व्यवसायों के व्यक्ति उस रास्ते से गुजरते थे।)

He took with him a dozen cowrie shells, a square of cloth with obscure mystic charts on it, a note book and a bundle of palmyra writings.

Answer.
He looked like an astrologer because he had rubbed pious dust and vermilion on his forehead, a saffron coloured turban on his head, dark and long whiskers with all the equipments of an astrologer spread before him.
(वह एक ज्योतिषी की भाँति मालूम पड़ता था क्योंकि उसने अपने माथे पर पवित्र राख और सिन्दूर लगा रखा था, एक गेरुआ रंग का साफा सिर पर बाँध लिया था, काली और लम्बी मूंछे थीं तथा एक ज्योतिषी का सारा सामान अपने सामने फैला रखा था।)

Answer.
One day when he was ready to go home, a man named Guru Nayak came to him in the dark. He was the astrologer’s enemy and he was in search of him. So he felt very uncomfortable in his presence.
(एक दिन जब वह घर जाने को तैयार था तब अँधेरे में उसके पास एक गुरु नायक नामक व्यक्ति आया। वह ज्योतिषी का दुश्मन था और वह उसकी तलाश में था। अतः वह उसकी उपस्थिति में बड़ा बेचैन रहा।)

Answer.
The astrologer behaved with him like a client. He did not let him know about himself.
(ज्योतिषी ने उसके साथ एक ग्राहक जैसा व्यवहार किया। उसे अपने विषय में कुछ नहीं जानने दिया।)

Answer.
The astrologer did not answer his questions willingly. First of all, he refused him. At this the man held his wrist and threatened him that he would not let him go home until he answered his questions. Then, the astrologer agreed to answer his questions..

(ज्योतिषी ने उसके प्रश्नों के उत्तर राजी से नहीं दिए। पहले उसने उसे मना कर दिया। इस पर उस व्यक्ति ने उसकी कलाई पकड़ ली और उसे धमकाया कि जब तक वह उसके प्रश्नों के उत्तर नहीं दे देता वह उसे घर नहीं जाने देगा। तब ज्योतिषी उत्तर देने को राजी हुआ।) ।

Answer.
The astrologer had murdered a man. So, he was always in fear of being caught. One day his enemy came before him in the dark of evening as his customer. The astrologer recognised him. So by his clever trick he made him assure that his enemy had died long before. So, he should leave his search and return home. Thus, he got rid of the load which he had been keeping in his mind.

(ज्योतिषी ने एक व्यक्ति की हत्या कर दी थी। इसलिए वह सदा पकड़े जाने के भय में रहता था। एक दिन शाम के अँधेरे में उसका दुश्मन उसके सामने ग्राहक के रूप में आ गया। ज्योतिषी उसे पहचान गया। अतः उसने चालाकी से उसे यह यकीन दिला दिया कि उसका दुश्मन काफी पहले मर गया है। अतः उसे उसकी खोज छोड़ देनी चाहिए और घर लौट जाना चाहिए। इस प्रकार उसने उस बोझ से छुटकारा पा लिया जिसे वह अपने मस्तिष्क में रखे हुआ था।)

Answer. .
The astrologer had a saffron turban on his head. He applied sandal paste on his forehead. Thus he hide his identity and began to sit under a tamarind tree. He answered the questions satisfactorily of the customers and charged three pies as fees from them. He earned a lot of money daily.

(ज्योतिषी ने अपने सिर पर नारंगी रंग की पगड़ी बाँधी और मस्तिष्क पर चन्दन का लेप लगाया। इस प्रकार उसने अपनी पहचान को छिपाया और एक इमली के पेड़ के नीचे बैठने लगा। वह अपने ग्राहकों के प्रश्नों के उत्तर सन्तोषजनक रूप से देता था और उनसे अपनी फीस के रूप में तीन पैसे वसूलता था। वह रोजाना बहुत धन कमाता था।)

Answer.
The astrologer advised stranger never to travel southward because he lived in this direction himself. And he was his enemy.
(ज्योतिष में अजनी को दक्षिण दिशं की यात्रा न करने की सलाह दी क्योंकि वह स्वयं उस दिशा में रहता था और क्ह उसका शत्रु था।

STORY at a Glance

AS Sanku was a low-paid worker at a factory. He was very poor. His mother had died. He had a wife and two children. A third child was expected to come soon. He had to take loan from his fund to attend the death anniversary of his mother. So he was to pay the loan with interest. He owed some money to the store-keeper and tea- vendor. He owed some money to the fish woman also. There were also some other urgent needs of the family.

Thus Sanku was surrounded by many domestic problems. He was so much worried that he could not sleep in the night also. He was very much confused and disturbed. He tried to find out the way to end his misery. But he could not get any solution. Sanku had seen a gold watch on the table of the engineer. The engineer was his boss. He had seen that the watch remained lying on the table when the engineer went on lunch. So Sanku was tempted to steal it. He had no other alternative to solve his problems. He thought he would get a considerable amount of money by selling it. One day at 1 o’clock the bell rang for interval. Everybody was in a hurry to go out. The engineer also went home. His watch was still lying on the table. There was nobody in the office. So Sanku thought it was the best time to steal the watch. He went into the office. But he was very nervous. He was afraid of being caught red-handed. His heart throbbed. But his urgent needs prompted him not to go back. So he gathered courage and put the watch into his pocket with trembling hands. Then he came out.

Now he was again trembling with fear. He doubted that somebody had seen him. He thought he would be checked by the watchman at the gate. He would be dismissed from his service. So he was again much confused. He could not control his feelings. So he again went to the office, saw in all directions and put the watch back at its place. Thus his problems and miseries remained unsolved.

कहानी पर एक दृष्टि

संकू एके कारखाने में कम वेतन वाला मजदूर था। वह बहुत गरीब था। उसकी माता का देहान्त हो गया था। उसकी एक पत्नी और दो बच्चे थे। एक तीसरे बच्चे के आने की शीघ्र आशा थी। उसे अपनी माँ की बरसी में जाने के लिए अपने फण्ड में से कर्जा लेना पड़ा था। इसलिए उसे वह कर्जा ब्याज सहित चुकाना था। कुछ धन उसे दुकानदार को तथा कुछ धन चाय वाले को देना था। मछली वाली औरत का भी धन उधार था। परिवार की और बहुत-सी जरूरी आवश्यकताएँ थीं।।

इस प्रकार संकू अनेक घरेलू समस्याओं से घिरा हुआ था। वह इतना परेशान था कि रात को सों भी नहीं सकता था। वह बड़ा घबराया हुआ और चिन्तित था। वह अपने इन दुःखों को समाप्त करने का तरीका ढूंढ़ने की कोशिश करता था। किन्तु कोई हल नहीं ढूंढ़ सका। संकू ने इन्जीनियर की मेज पर एक सोने की घड़ी देखी। इन्जीनियर उसका अफसर था। उसने देखा कि जब इन्जीनियर दोपहर का भोजन करने जाता था तब भी घड़ी वहीं पड़ी रहती थी। इसलिए संकू को लालच आ गया कि वह उसे चुरा ले। अपनी समस्याओं को हल करने का उसके पास कोई और विकल्प था भी नहीं। उसने सोचा कि इसे बेचकर उसे काफी धन मिल जाएगा। एक दिन दोपहर को एक बजे मध्यान्तर की घण्टी बजी। प्रत्येक व्यक्ति बाहर जाने के लिए जल्दी में था। इन्जीनियर साहब भी घर चले गए। उनकी घड़ी अब भी मेज पर पड़ी थी। दफ्तर में कोई व्यक्ति नहीं था। इसलिए संकू ने सोचा कि घड़ी चुराने का यह सबसे अच्छा समय है। वह दफ्तर में गया। किन्तु वह बहुत घबराया हुआ था। उसे रंगे हाथों पकड़े जाने का भय था। उसका हृदय धड़क रहा था। किन्तु उसकी जरूरी

आवश्यकताएँ उसे पीछे न हटने के लिए प्रेरित कर रही थीं। इसलिए उसने साहस बटोरा और काँपते हुए हाथों से घड़ी को अपनी जेब में रख लिया। फिर वह बाहर आया। अब वह पुन: भय से काँप रहा था। उसे सन्देह हुआ कि किसी ने उसे देख लिया है। उसने सोचा कि गेट पर चौकीदार उसे रोक लेगा। उसे नौकरी से हटा दिया जाएगा। वह पुनः घबरा गया। वह अपनी भावनाओं पर नियन्त्रण न कर सका। इसलिए वह दफ्तर में पुनः गया। चारों ओर देखा और घड़ी को वापस उसी स्थान पर रख दिया। इस प्रकार उसकी समस्याएँ और दुःख बिना हल किए ही रहे।

Answer.
There were mainly two problems before Sanku :
(1) to meet the expenses of his family in his small income, and
(2) to repay the loan which he owed to different people. Sanku had only one way to solve these problems, to pick up the gold watch from the office table of his officer and to get money by selling it.

About the Poet : Rabindranath Tagore is one of the most famous poets of India. He was born in Kolkata on May 6, 1861. He was educated mostly at home. He won Noble Prize in 1931. He had a great insight in the understanding of human life. He died in 1941.

About the Poem : In this poem Rabindranath Tagore expresses his love for India. So he describes what type of country he wants and prays to God likewise. This poem is an extract from his famous work Gitanjali a collection of short poems.

Central Idea [2009, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18]
In this poem the poet imagines a country where the people’s minds should be free from fear and narrow mindedness. They should have no distinction of caste, race or language. They should not be conservative. They should share knowledge freely and use their reason in thinking and doing. They should follow the path of Truth under the guidance of God. Then his country will be heaven on earth.

[Word-meanings : fragments = टुकड़े pieces; narrow domestic walls = जाति, धर्म, भाषा आदि के आधार पर आन्तरिक विभाजन internal divisions due to caste, creed, language, etc.)

(यहाँ टैगोर बताते हैं कि स्वतन्त्रता वहाँ है जहाँ लोगों के मस्तिष्क में कोई भय न हो और जहाँ सम्मान से सिर ऊँचा रहता हो। जहाँ ज्ञान प्राप्त करने के लिए प्रत्येक व्यक्ति स्वतन्त्र हो। जहाँ संसार धर्म, जाति तथा भाषा के आधार पर छोटे-छोटे टुकड़ों में विभाजित न हो और जहाँ विचार हृदय की गहराई से प्रकट होते हों अर्थात् जहाँ किसी को धोखा न दिया जाता हो।)

Context : It is an extract from the famous work of Tagore ‘Gitanjali’. In this poem the poet expresses his lofty concept of freedom. He does not want political freedom. But he wants freedom in every field of life, social or spiritual.

Explanation : In this stanza the poet advises his countrymen to know the meaning of true happiness and to enjoy it. They should live in an atmosphere free from fear where they feel themselves proud and dignified. They should have self-respect. Everybody should be free in getting knowledge and in using his reasoning power. Society should not be divided into small sections on the narrow basis of religion, caste and language. They should be true to everyone.
