Dr. Usha Mehta was a Gandhian and freedom fighter who is also known for her efforts in organising the Congress Radio, a clandestine radio station to spread nationalistic fervor at a time when the country was vehemently fighting the British.

As a young child, she would protest in front of liquor shops, secretly distribute various publications and be a messenger for those who were imprisoned in jail

In 1928, at the age of eight, she took part in her first protest against the Simon Commission.

When Dr. Usha shifted to Bombay, she fully participated in the freedom struggle.

In 1942, in an All India Congress Committee session, Dr. Usha Mehta was privy to the powerful speeches given by , Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Azad and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This gave her the impetus to organise a secret radio station and help deliver news to the remotest corners of the world.

She ardently believed that the radio could be used as a tool to help deliver facts and inform the people of the world about the events taking place in her country.

On 14th August 1942, Dr. Usha, along with her associates launched the first announcement of “Congress Radio”. In this show, she would deliver the news bulletin in both English and Hindi. They would commence the show with the song “Hindustan Hamara” and close it with “Vande Mataram”. To remain underground, they needed to frequently change their positions as to remain anonymous and hidden from the British radar. In the duration of the Quit India Movement, they changed around 7-8 stations.

On 12th November 1942, as they were hosting a show from , the police arrested Usha Mehta along with her associates. She was tried in a special court for five weeks and sentenced for four years of rigorous imprisonment. She was released in 1946, the first political prisoner to be released in Bombay.

During the imprisonment, Dr. Usha was kept in solitary confinement and enticed by the government with offers to study abroad in exchange for information about her fellow freedom fighters. However, she remained adamant and did not disclose any information.

Each year, we commemorate World Tuberculosis (TB) Day on March 24 to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB.

Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, that usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain.

History
* The date marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes TB, which opened the way towards diagnosing and curing this disease.

Current Global Scenario
* TB remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious killers. Each day, over 4100 people lose their lives to TB and close to 28,000 people fall ill with this preventable and curable disease.
* Global efforts to combat TB have saved an estimated 66 million lives since the year 2000.
* However, the COVID-19 pandemic has reversed years of progress made in the fight to end TB. For the first time in over a decade, TB deaths increased in 2020.
* Tuberculosis appears to be an old disease affecting approximately 2 billion people worldwide.
* According to WHO, 10.4 million individuals got tuberculosis, and 1.7 million people died from this infectious disease in 2016.

Theme 2022
* The theme of World TB Day 2022 - ‘Invest to End TB. Save Lives.’ –conveys the urgent need to invest resources to ramp up the fight against TB and achieve the commitments to end TB made by global leaders.
* This is especially critical in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic that has put End TB progress at risk, and to ensure equitable access to prevention and care in line with WHO’s drive towards achieving Universal Health Coverage.

Diwas or '_Day is celebrated on every year to pay tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for freeing India from the clutches of rule.

On this very day in history in 1931, British government hanged Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, in the Lahore Conspiracy Case.

History
* After the death of the , Lala Lajpat Rai, in November 1928, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev and others vowed to take revenge, as Rai was a major leader of India's independence movement.
