Meditation can be practiced within the confines of our everyday life.

We live a normal life in the world, but the difference is that we add time daily for meditation and try to become more ethical so as to accelerate our progress.

We do our best at our jobs, attend to our family obligations, earn an honest livelihood, and try to help others. While doing all this we keep our eyes on the spiritual journey and the spiritual values of life.

Our days easily fill up with things that we have to do, and self-care is usually at the bottom of the list. But a short daily meditation practice may reduce stress, anxiety and depression while improving mood, resilience, focus and a sense of well-being.
It can give you the fuel you need to accomplish your goals. Most importantly, meditation is a gift you can give yourself every day!
Meditation can help people with autism increase communication and social behaviors while decreasing aggressive behaviors.
It can also help those with anxiety, depression, and ADHD be more aware of their feelings and manage negative ones.

How do you learn to meditate? In mindfulness meditation, we’re learning how to pay attention to the breath as it goes in and out, and notice when the mind wanders from this task. This practice of returning to the breath builds the muscles of attention and mindfulness.

When we pay attention to our breath, we are learning how to return to, and remain in, the present moment—to anchor ourselves in the here and now on purpose, without judgement.

As the moon is connected to spiritual practices, it is very good to meditate on a full moon day. Moreover, the moon has an effect on water and our body is approximately 70% water. Hence on the day of Purnima or full moon it is beneficial to do meditation.

The 'Full Moon Meditation' guided by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar rejuvenates our body and mind. This meditation is done sitting in the direction of east or west and preferably under moonlight.

Patanjali came much later and sort of assimilated everything. He saw that it was getting too diversified and complex for anyone to understand in any meaningful way. So he assimilated and included all aspects into a certain format – as the Yoga Sutras.

Sutra literally means a thread. Or in modern language we can say it is like a formula. Anyone who knows the English alphabet, even a kindergarten child can say E=mc², but there is an enormous amount of science behind that little formula, which most people do not understand. The sutras are like this, in thread form. Out of ignorance, people have just taken these sutras and are trying to implement it as it is. A thread is of no consequence by itself. There can never be a garland without the thread but no one ever wears a garland for the sake of the thread. The thread was given so that each master makes his own kind of garland. You can put flowers on it, or beads or pearls or diamonds. The thread is vital but that is not a goal by itself.

Sit down. Sit still with your back straight. Close your eyes lightly. Then interiorly, silently begin to recite a single word – a prayer word or mantra. We recommend the ancient Christian prayer-word “Maranatha”. Say it as four equal syllables. Breathe normally and give your full attention to the word as you say it, silently, gently, faithfully and – above all – simply.

The essence of meditation is simplicity. Stay with the same word during the whole meditation and in each meditation day to day. Don’t visualise but listen to the word, as you say it. Let go of all thoughts (even good thoughts), images and other words. Don’t fight your distractions: let them go by saying your word faithfully, gently and attentively and returning to it as soon as you realise you have stopped saying or it or when your attention wanders.

Maha means great mind. Mudra means all-pervasive. When we are first learning meditation, it is important to know two things. First, the mind is the base of happiness and suffering. Our mind is not reliable as a source of calmness. It always changes… The most important thing to understand is that when the mind is calm, the mind is happy. When the mind is not calm, the mind is not happy… These differences are very important things for the meditator to know. Not just knowing in the mind (intellectually), but having the experience.

Meditation is a powerful tool for spiritual growth, and is essentially a process to take one beyond the limitations of body and mind.

Teachers and practitioners of these “inner technologies” have also experienced the many physical and mental benefits of meditation and Yoga.

In recent years, a growing number of scientific studies and research on meditation have corroborated these experiences. Isha’s introductory practice is the Shambhavi Mahamudra, an ancient kriya that has millions of dedicated practitioners who aver that they experience greater emotional balance, concentration, focus, stability and better health with regular practice of the meditation.

In fact, there have been several scientific studies that measure the various benefits of practicing the kriya regularly – both with regard to brain activity during the kriya, as well as statistical research of how it affects people’s health and well-being.

Meditation of one style or another can be found in most of the major religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. Generally, Eastern religions have tended to concentrate on meditation as a means of realising spiritual enlightenment, a fundamental part of which has been the use of many health-promoting practices that go hand in hand with the spiritual ones.

Many millions of people in the West and elsewhere in the world are active meditators. Meditation in the West is practiced for both health and religious or spiritual reasons, although many people regard it mainly as a self-help tool for improving cognitive (thought) performance and for managing stress.

Meditation has so many benefits because it is the best method for generating positive views and intentions - mental attitudes that cause us to develop a peaceful mind. The benefits of meditation are explained in How to Transform Your Life, and can be summarized as follows:

Our mind gradually becomes more and more peaceful, and we experience a purer and purer form of happiness
Eventually we will be happy all the time, even in the most difficult circumstances
We create an inner space and clarity that enables us to control our mind regardless of external circumstances
We develop mental equilibrium, a balanced mind that is happy all the time, rather than an unbalanced mind that oscillates between the extremes of excitement and despondency
We are able to eradicate from our mind the delusions that are the causes of all our problems and suffering
We will experience the supreme permanent inner peace of nirvana
