We are happy to share the news that Department of Chemistry, Banwarilal Bhalotia College, Kazi Nazrul University & Centre for Cosmology and Science Popularization, SGT University have jointly organized a Four-day Learning and Interactive Workshop for UG & PG students in Science Communication and Astronomy in October, 2024

During the week between Durga Puja and Diwali, over 60 eager students from B.B. College participated in a four-day workshop focused on astronomy and space science entitled, “VIKRAM SARABHAI LECTURE SERIES-1” organized by the Chemistry Department under the IQAC's guidance.
The event commenced on October 22 with an inaugural speech by Dr. Amitabha Basu, the Principal of B.B. College, attended by IQAC coordinator Dr. Sudipta Das, R&D Committee Convener Dr. Subharthi Sarkar, Head of the Chemistry Department Dr. Snigdha Roy, event Convener Dr. Binita Dutta, and numerous faculty and students.
The workshop featured Senior Project Scientist Mr. Avik Dasgupta from the Centre for Cosmology and Science Popularization (CCSP), Shree Guru Gobind Singh Tricentenary University, as the primary resource person.
The aim of the workshop was to enlighten students about the hierarchical arrangement of astrophysical objects and current topics in space science.
Participants included undergraduate students from various disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, BCA, Geography, Botany, and Computer Science, who engaged in hands-on interactive training and research related to astronomy. In an era where misinformation spreads easily through social media, the event emphasized the importance of accessing accurate astronomy-based information. Students learned about effective science communication to help connect the public with reliable knowledge. The lectures also explored potential career paths and contemporary science policies.
On October 24 and 25, students conducted research on recent space science topics in interdisciplinary groups, guided by Mr. Avik Dasgupta, Dr. Binita Dutta, and Dr. Sudipta Das. They presented their findings via PowerPoint presentations.
The series concluded with a lecture from Mr. Dasgupta on constellations, their connection to zodiac signs, and software tools for locating them in the night sky. The program wrapped up with a vote of thanks from Dr. Dutta, followed by a certificate distribution ceremony.
