“Photographer who saved emotions” JMC department pays tribute to legendary Photojournalist Raghu Rai

On 30 April 2026, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak organised a programme. The session titled “A Tribute to Raghu Rai” was held at the JMC Auditorium to honour legendary Indian photojournalist late Raghu Rai. The programme witnessed active participation from PhD scholars, students, faculty members, and Assistant Professors from various departments of the university.

During the event, a documentary on Raghu Rai titled 'Hearing Through The Eyes' which was produced by film division of India, was screened for the students to introduce them to the life, vision, and contribution of the renowned photojournalist.

After the documentary screening, Dean and Head of the Department Prof. Raghavendra Mishra addressed the students and highlighted the contribution of Raghu Rai to Indian photojournalism. He described Raghu Rai as one of the foremost pioneers of Indian photojournalism who has inspired and trained nearly three generations in the field of photography. Referring to Rai, Prof. Mishra explained the emotional depth and social impact created through Raghu Rai’s visual storytelling. He gave examples of his photography on Bhopal Gas Tragedy, Operation Blue Star, Liberation of Bangladesh among others.

He further stated that in photojournalism it is often said that “one photograph tells the story of a thousand words,” and Raghu Rai’s work stands as a powerful example of this philosophy. Drawing a comparison with the world of cinema, Prof. Mishra said that just as Satyajit Ray is regarded as a legendary personality with a distinct style in filmmaking, Raghu Rai occupies a similarly iconic position in the field of photojournalism.

The programme was organised under the guidance of Dean and Head Prof. Raghavendra Mishra and Dr. Vasu Chaudhary. Students and research scholars described the session as highly inspiring and academically enriching, especially for those interested in photography, journalism, and visual communication.

“Students must be creative and skilful,” Says IGNTU VC as JMC concludes workshop on Digital Media and Generative AI
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC), Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU), successfully concluded its three-day National Workshop on “Digital Media and Generative AI” on November 8, in the gracious presence of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof Byomakesh Tripathy. The hands-on workshop, which began on November 6, featured Dr. Pawan Koundal, a distinguished media professional and academician, as the key resource person.
Addressing the valedictory session, Prof Tripathy underscored the growing significance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital media in shaping the future of journalism and communication. He asked students to “learn to be creative and skilful,” emphasising that technological literacy and innovation are essential for the next generation of media professionals.
Promising full institutional support to the department, the Vice Chancellor announced, “By February, we will have a production house running with all facilities.” He assured that the university would provide all necessary equipment and infrastructure to enhance hands-on learning and practical exposure. Prof Tripathy also stressed that such workshops must continue in the future to help students and researchers stay aligned with global media trends.
Encouraging research scholars to depend on authentic primary sources while using AI tools responsibly, he said, “Researchers must prioritise originality and the ethical use of technology.” He further emphasised the importance of rigorous fact-checking in the field of media.
Delivering his remarks, Dr Pawan Koundal expressed heartfelt gratitude to the university and the department for inviting him. He commended the students enthusiasm and adaptability, noting, “I did not expect such an engaging and responsive group of students in a remote location like Amarkantak.” He also appreciated the efforts of the faculty in nurturing such a vibrant academic environment.
The valedictory session was concluded with the gracious presence of Prof Manisha Sharma and Prof Raghavendra Mishra, Dean and Head of the JMC Department. The workshop comprised five intensive sessions attended by more than 85 students and 13 research scholars.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Prof Raghavendra Mishra described the workshop as a “successful academic endeavour” and thanked the university administration for its consistent support. While applauding the integration of Generative AI in media, he reminded students to uphold ethical standards in journalism, emphasizing, “Technology must serve truth, not distort it.”
