What exactly happened at LPU last night?
A serious allegation began circulating among students that a female student had allegedly been sexually assaulted on campus. The allegation appears to have triggered a large late-night student protest, during which students also raised broader concerns about the university administration and the way their grievances were being handled.
What has been confirmed so far?
According to Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora, police had not received any complaint or information confirming that a sexual assault had taken place. Police reached the campus after being informed about the gathering and appealed to students to maintain peace.
The Indian Express described the sexual-assault claim as an “unverified report.” Its reporting also stated that the protest later turned violent, with university property damaged, some objects set on fire, and students blocking the Jalandhar–Phagwara National Highway.
At the same time, several additional claims are circulating online — including claims that a student died by su***de, that a body was hidden, or that an alleged victim was sent home. These claims should not be treated as established facts unless and until credible evidence or an official source confirms them.
There are therefore two distinct issues that should not be conflated:
1. What, if anything, happened to the student that led to the sexual-assault allegation?
2. Why did the subsequent student protest escalate into vandalism, arson, and a highway blockade?
Those questions require evidence and independent verification.
For now, the responsible way to describe the sexual-assault claim is as an allegation that had not been verified, rather than as an established incident.
Facts, allegations, and rumours should be kept separate — especially when the claims involve a potentially serious crime.
