New MBBS, BDS Students Don White Coats
Aligarh, December 20: White coats were placed on the shoulders of 150 newly admitted Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and 40 Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students marking their passage into the medical and dental education in a special ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) auditorium of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
These students later read the Hippocratic Oath signifying their transition from the study of preclinical to clinical health sciences to study at the AMU’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) and Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Dental College (ZADC).
Addressing the new students, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said, “As you all embark on this new journey; it is expected that you will find ways to embrace learning and anchor yourself in the importance and meaning of relationships. The new students should keep in mind that they have contributions to make in the honored medical and dental science professions which involve a large component of service and personal sacrifice”.
He added: “JNMC and ZADC are among the best in India and there is a unique environment in these colleges to help prepare students in thrilling and unexpected ways for the many advances and scholarships coming in medical and dental fields. These colleges are a special part of AMU, a culture rich higher seat of learning which imparts training to shape its students for the rest of their lives”.
“As students don the white coats and swear to uphold specific ethical standards, they must not forget that it is also a great moment for their parents, who have longed to see them becoming doctors and dentists”, said Prof M U Rabbani (Dean, Faculty of Medicine).
He stressed, “Health care profession is an opportunity to save lives and doctors are required to treat the sick to the best of their ability, preserve patient privacy and to teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation”.
“Over the course of four-and-a-half years, the medical and dental students will find innovative and groundbreaking teaching, research, and healing taking place”, said Prof Rakesh Bhargava (Principal, JNMC).
He also urged the new students to cultivate qualities like humility, courage, charity, and patience in their character.

From now on, all the new students must keep in mind that the profession they are entering into demands giving priority to the interests of patients and setting up standards of competence and integrity”.
