Early this morning, the MAMES Program embarked on a trip to the Israel Intelligence Heritage & Commemoration Center (IICC). This center is devoted to shedding light on some of the more secretive chapters in Israel’s history. Its mission is to honor, remember and preserve information about members of Israel’s intelligence agencies and to commemorate the fallen from all branches of Israeli intelligence. Its members include veterans from Israel Defense Intelligence (IDI),the Israel Security Agency (ISA, also Shabak or Shin Bet), the Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations (Mossad) and Nativ.
During our visit we saw films regarding the process by which the Intelligence community manages current threats and of the IICC’s involvement in the rescue of Jewish communities in peril in Yemen, Iraq, Morocco, Ethiopia and other regions. We also viewed exhibits including artifacts and documentations illustrating tangible threats, propaganda, the perpetuation of hate and the Intelligence war against terrorism. We also heard lectures by members of the Intelligence community telling stories of missions in which they were involved. This trip gave an insightful and meaningful experience.

Recently, our MAMES Program embarked on our final trip of the year to Jerusalem. We began our day at the Jaffa Gate, the historical entrance to the city and the point where the East meets the West. From there we ascended to the top of the Tower of David where we had a breathtaking, panoramic view of Jerusalem; the Old City and the New City, the Four Quarters, the new neighborhoods, the Mount of Olives, Mount Scopus, the Judean Desert and the Dead Sea in the distance, this view is the only one of its kind. We then went on a tour of the City of David, passing through the excavations of David’s palace and also through the new excavations that were just opened to the public. This connected us to the corner of the Ancient Western Wall where we prayed and placed notes in its crevices. We continued on through the Jewish quarter which was buzzing with activity in preparation for Shabbat. We then followed the journey of Jesus and major sites along the Via Dolorosa and of course the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. We ended our trip by visiting the largest, most popular market in Jerusalem; ‘Shuk Mahane Yehuda’. There we observed the vibrant scene of locals and tourists shopping and hanging out with their friends in cafes, restaurants and bars.
