Historical Character Essay – Instructions
Task:
Write a short essay from the point of view of a historical character.
Instructions:
1. Choose one historical character (for example: Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Napoleon, Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln).
2. Write in the first person (“I”), as if you are that character.
3. Explain why the last year was the best or the worst year of your life, from that character’s point of view.
4. Use past tense only:
• Past Simple (e.g., I decided, I spoke, I fought)
• Past Progressive (e.g., I was leading, I was hiding, I was planning)
5. Length: about 100 words.
6. Structure your essay using OREO:
• O – Opinion (best or worst year)
• R – Reason
• E – Example from the character’s life
• O – Opinion again (conclusion)
