Warm congratulations to Prof. Havatzelet Yahel, faculty member at the Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism, on the publication of her new article:

“Collective Punishment in Mandatory Palestine: Custom, Law and the Practice of British Imperial Rule”

The article was published in the excellent Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History and examines the development of collective punishment policy under the British Mandate, focusing on the intersections of law, local custom, and imperial governance.

המינוי, שניתן בתום שנת השבתון של אביעד באוניברסיטת פלורידה, מבטא שנה פורייה במיוחד של מחקר, הוראה ובניית שיתופי פעולה אקדמיים בינלאומיים.

בין ההישגים הבולטים של השנה: הקמת קונסורציום חדש ללימודי יהדות באמריקות, בשיתוף מוסדות מארצות הברית, גרמניה, מקסיקו וקנדה, וכן חתימה על מזכר הבנות בין אוניברסיטת פלורידה לאוניברסיטת בן־גוריון בנגב.

דווקא בתקופה מורכבת זו, העמקת הקשרים האקדמיים הבינלאומיים וחיזוק מעמדה של האקדמיה הישראלית בעולם הם הישגים ראויים להערכה מיוחדת.

We are proud and delighted to congratulate our faculty member, Dr. Aviad Moreno, on his appointment as Courtesy Associate Professor at the University of Florida.

The appointment, awarded at the conclusion of Aviad’s sabbatical year at the University of Florida, reflects an exceptionally productive year of research, teaching, and the development of significant international academic collaborations.

Among the year’s notable achievements are the establishment of a new consortium for the study of Jewish life in the Americas, bringing together institutions from the United States, Germany, Mexico, and Canada, as well as the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the University of Florida and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

At this complex moment, strengthening international academic partnerships and advancing the global presence of Israeli scholarship are especially meaningful accomplishments.

Dear Aviad, warmest congratulations on this impressive appointment. We are proud of you and wish you continued success in your creative, productive, and influential academic work!

The Israeli Mosaic summer course, a two-credit undergraduate course taught by Prof. Paula Kabalo at Handong Global University in South Korea, marked the first academic initiative to introduce Korean students to the modern history of Israel.

The course opened with two online sessions connecting students in Korea with lecturers in Israel, followed by two and a half weeks of in-person teaching in Korea. It offered students an opportunity to encounter Israel beyond its biblical and ancient past, and to develop a broader understanding of the country’s modern history and contemporary society.

The initiative also drew the attention of the Embassy of Israel in Korea. The Deputy Chief of Mission and the Academic Affairs Officer attended one of the class sessions, reflecting the wider interest generated by the course.

The program concluded with a special seminar on Israeli demography, focusing on birth rates, family values, and the historical and social forces shaping contemporary Israeli society. In South Korea, where the fertility rate remains below one child per woman, the subject prompted especially lively interest and discussion.

The seminar featured Israeli scholars Prof. Avi Bareli and Dr. Estee Rieder, who joined via Zoom, with Prof. Kabalo serving as moderator.

The successful completion of the course has laid a promising foundation for future academic cooperation in Israel Studies between Israel and South Korea.

שיתוף פעולה אקדמי בין-לאומי במכון בן-גוריון | International Academic Collaboration at the Ben-Gurion Research Institute

בשבוע שעבר נפגשו פרופ׳ אריה ספוזניק, ראש מכון בן-גוריון לחקר ישראל והציונות, וד״ר מורדי מילר עם פרופ׳ אומוט קורקוט, פרופסור לפוליטיקה בין-לאומית בבית הספר לעסקים וחברה של אוניברסיטת גלזגו קלדוניאן.

פרופ׳ קורקוט שוהה בימים אלו בישראל במסגרת המחזור הראשון של התכנית הבין-לאומית DARE באוניברסיטת בן-גוריון בנגב, בהובלת פרופ׳ מיכל בר-אשר סיגל ובתמיכת נשיא האוניברסיטה, פרופ׳ דניאל חיימוביץ. במהלך שהותו באוניברסיטה מתארח פרופ׳ קורקוט במכון בן-גוריון, בליוויו האקדמי של ד״ר מילר.

במפגש דנו המשתתפים באפשרויות לשיתוף פעולה מחקרי סביב פוליטיקה בעתות משבר וחירום, מושג האחריות, והשוואות בין הונגריה, תורכיה וישראל בעת הזו.

תודתנו נתונה לפרופ׳ אומוט קורקוט על הביקור והשיחה המרתקת; לפרופ׳ מיכל בר-אשר סיגל ולצוות DARE; ולמחלקה לקשרים אקדמיים בין-לאומיים, ובמיוחד לרכזת המחלקה קלייר הומנס בוזגלו, על החיבור והליווי.

Last week, Prof. Arieh Saposnik, Director of the Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism, and Dr. Mordechai Miller met with Prof. Umut Korkut, Professor of International Politics at the Glasgow School for Business and Society, Glasgow Caledonian University.

Prof. Korkut is currently in Israel as part of the first cohort of Ben-Gurion University’s international DARE program, led by Prof. Michal Bar-Asher Siegal and supported by BGU President Prof. Daniel Chamovitz. During his stay at the university, Prof. Korkut is being hosted at the Ben-Gurion Research Institute, with Dr. Miller serving as his academic host.

The meeting focused on potential academic collaboration around politics in times of crisis and emergency, the concept of responsibility, and comparative perspectives on Hungary, Turkey, and Israel today.

Our thanks go to Prof. Umut Korkut for his visit and stimulating conversation; to Prof. Michal Bar-Asher Siegal and the DARE team; and to BGU International, especially Department Coordinator Claire Homans Bouzaglo, for facilitating and supporting this connection.

שיתוף פעולה אקדמי חדש | A New Academic Partnership

אנו שמחים לבשר על חתימת הסכם הבנות חדש בין אוניברסיטת בן-גוריון בנגב, באמצעות מרכז עזריאלי ללימודי ישראל (מעל"י) במכון בן-גוריון לחקר ישראל והציונות, לבין ארגון בני ברית הבינלאומי, באמצעות מכון דניאל ס' מריאשין למנהיגות ולמדיניות ציבורית.

שיתוף הפעולה יקדם מחקר אקדמי בסוגיות מרכזיות הנוגעות לישראל ולעם היהודי בעת הזו, ובהן הקשר בין אנטי-ציונות לאנטישמיות, מושג הילידיות היהודית, תהליכי הדה-לגיטימציה של ישראל בזירה הבינלאומית, וכן ההיסטוריה של בני ברית העולמית ותרומתה למדינת ישראל.

במסגרת ההסכם יתקיים גם כנס בינלאומי, שיפגיש חוקרות וחוקרים, מומחיות ומומחים, לדיון מעמיק בסוגיות אלה.

מנכ"ל בני ברית הבינלאומי, דניאל ס' מריאשין, בירך על ההסכם והדגיש את חשיבותו של מחקר אקדמי מעמיק ואחראי להבנת הקשר בין אנטי-ציונות, אנטישמיות ואתגרי הדה-לגיטימציה של ישראל בזירה הבינלאומית. הוא הוסיף כי בני ברית הבינלאומי גאה בשיתוף הפעולה עם אוניברסיטת בן-גוריון בנגב, ובפרט בקיומו של כנס בינלאומי שיפגיש חוקרים ומומחים מובילים לדיון בסוגיות אלה.

We are pleased to announce the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding between Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, through the Azrieli Center for Israel Studies at the Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism, and B’nai B’rith International, through the Daniel S. Mariaschin Institute for Leadership and Public Policy.

This new partnership will promote academic research on key issues concerning Israel and the Jewish people today, including the relationship between anti-Zionism and antisemitism, the concept of Jewish indigeneity, the delegitimization of Israel in the international arena, and the history of B’nai B’rith International and its contribution to the State of Israel.

The collaboration will also include an international conference, bringing together leading scholars and experts for an in-depth discussion of these important questions.

B’nai B’rith International CEO Daniel S. Mariaschin welcomed the agreement and emphasized the importance of rigorous and responsible academic research for understanding the relationship between anti-Zionism, antisemitism, and the delegitimization of Israel in the international arena. He added that B’nai B’rith International is proud to collaborate with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, particularly through an international conference that will bring together leading scholars and experts to discuss these issues.
