Uncertainty, ADHD and Neurodiversity
Jews are living in uncertain times. In Israel, we find ourselves under threat of imminent attack. In the Diaspora, we witness the surging tide of antisemitism threatening our security. How this uncertainty affects our neurodiverse children is largely in our power to control.
When we allow the threat of potential catastrophe to heighten our anxiety and paralyze us, we transmit a sense of being overwhelmed and overpowered by life. On the other hand, uncertainty may be conceptualized as opportunity and challenge. For example, one can comprehend the surrounding antisemitism as terrifying or it can be seen as a means of clearly identifying our friends and distinguishing them from our enemies. In a similar manner, the threats of destruction bellowed by Iran may petrify us into extreme anxiety, or they may strengthen our faith. Alternatively, they may strengthen our connection with the power of our allies or with our own military and intelligence capabilities.
In simple terms, life is replete with uncertainty. When a neurodiverse individual adopts a rigid mode of thought or behavior in order to cope, they are simply trying to feel safe. As parents, we transmit to our children our underlying perspective on coping with the vicissitudes of life. When we use uncertainty as an opportunity to embrace and actualize our innermost ideals, the uncertainty is welcomed. When uncertainty brings only fear and anxiety, it overwhelms us.
Children with ADHD tend to enjoy surprises and new stimuli. When we experience uncertainty as a novel situation that strengthens our faith, we become stronger. When uncertainty only creates internal anxiety, we panic and create chaos.
Children on the autistic spectrum tend to be attracted to consistency and repetition. When uncertainty allows us to strengthen, practice and reinforce our deepest principles, it is a source of strength. Should uncertainty create a panic attack, there is little to be done to help our children.
May God give us the strength to deal with challenges facing us with an internal confidence and fortitude and may we be worthy parents to our children.
