Soulful Chess

Most kids don’t quit chess because it’s too hard or they get bored.
They quit because of everything around it.
By 13, the majority are gone. The excitment of wins and trophies is gone and they are left with the pressure and hardship.
Parents take over, losing becomes unacceptable and playing chess becomes lonely.
It’s a pattern clubs see everywhere but nobody is talking about it.
Why do kids really quit chess, and what actually keeps them playing?

I started my fitness journey again, and it wasn't pretty.
I ended up throwing up on the gym floor after my first session with a trainer.
In that moment, it was easy to feel defeated and embarrassed, but then I remembered a quote that resonated with me: "Don't shy away from humble beginnings."
This made me think about chess. Every grandmaster started with a single pawn, and every beginner has to learn how to accept a loss. It's the same with anything new you start. Change isn't always pretty, and it's definitely not easy, but the most important thing is to just start.
I'm choosing to be proud of my "humble beginning," and I'm ready for the next challenge.
What's a "humble beginning" you're proud of?
