🖼️Art can turn a dorm room into a home

Seventy works of art from Technion students’ dorm rooms are featured in the second season of the Dorms Art Survey, offering a glimpse into the personal worlds, stories, and inspirations of the students who live and study on campus.

From a samurai and an F-35 fighter jet to images inspired by Rocky IV, the works reveal the memories, ambitions, and passions students choose to keep close to them.

“Home is not the place you are in, it is the place within you,” said Prof. Guedi Capeluto, dean of students.

Curated by Valeria Geselev, the exhibition presents full-scale reproductions of the students’ artwork along the corridors of the Ullmann Building, creating a collective portrait of the diverse community that calls the Technion home.

Ten years ago, Prof. Roy Kishony of the הפקולטה לביולוגיה בטכניון Technion Faculty of Biology and Dr. Michael Baym of Harvard University published a groundbreaking study in Science. The researchers created a unique platform: an enormous Petri dish divided into sections containing progressively higher concentrations of antibiotics. Using this system, they were able to capture the development of bacterial resistance on video in real time, observing how bacteria adapt and develop resistance as they advance toward higher antibiotic concentrations. Evolution in action!

Now, a decade after this scientific breakthrough, the fascinating experiment is making its way into the education system and is featured in the new textbook Derech HaBiologia (“The Way of Biology”). In the chapter on ecology, middle school students learn about the experiment as a vivid example of evolution taking place right before our eyes.

The experiment’s inclusion in the curriculum beautifully demonstrates how fundamental academic research does not remain confined to the scientific community. It reaches beyond the lab, shapes the way young students learn, and inspires the next generation of scientists.

The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities recently held a special symposium honoring Prof. Emerita Rachelle Alterman of the Technion’s Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning on the occasion of her 80th birthday.

An internationally renowned urban planner and legal scholar, Prof. Alterman is a pioneer of comparative research connecting urban planning, land policy, and law. In her lecture, she explored how international comparative research can challenge deeply rooted myths and help shape more effective policies in planning, land, and housing.

Prof. Alterman also expressed her gratitude to the Technion for providing the academic freedom that has enabled her to pursue pioneering research and challenge conventional thinking throughout her career.

Congratulations, Prof. Alterman, on this special milestone!

From the Technion to a $17 billion company

At just 17, Alex Bouaziz left France and moved to Israel on his own to study engineering at the Technion.

Why the Technion? As he tells ynet Global: “The best school in my opinion was the Technion.”

That decision became a key milestone in an extraordinary journey. After graduating from the Technion, Bouaziz continued to MIT and eventually co-founded Deel, the global HR and payroll platform that today serves more than 40,000 customers in 150 countries and is valued at around $17 billion.

Another inspiring example of how a Technion education can become the starting point for global entrepreneurship and impact.

🏗️ Concrete Structures Rise in Seconds

Technion and Columbia University researchers have developed a self-deploying reinforced concrete system that could dramatically reduce construction time, cost, and environmental impact.

In a striking demonstration, a reinforced concrete structure 2.36 meters high and 2.4 meters wide deployed into its full shape in just 14 seconds during concrete casting.

The innovative system uses compact, multistable tubes that unfold automatically under the pressure of poured concrete, eliminating the need to assemble and dismantle conventional formwork on site. Tests also showed that the permanent polymer shell increased the load-bearing capacity of concrete columns by approximately 200%.

The research was led by Prof. Amir G*t and doctoral student Ezra Ben-Abu of the Technion, with Dr. Anna Zigelman and Columbia University Prof. Hod Lipson. The study was published in Communications Engineering and highlighted in Nature Cities.

🔥 AI takes flight in the fight against wildfires.

A new drone-based wildfire detection system developed through a national collaboration is helping identify fires within minutes of ignition, before they can spread.

The Technion's contribution is at the heart of the system: advanced AI and image-processing algorithms developed by Prof. Assaf Schuster and his team from the Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science. The technology analyzes data from onboard cameras and infrared sensors in real time, pinpoints fire outbreaks, and immediately alerts emergency responders.

Mounted on Israel Aerospace Industries' APUS 25 drone, the system can monitor hundreds of square kilometers for hours, providing critical situational awareness and enabling faster, more effective firefighting.

"The Fire Detection system demonstrates how scientific excellence can be translated into a practical solution that helps save lives and reduce damage," said Prof. Schuster.

This successful first flight test marks an important step toward using AI to protect communities and natural landscapes.

Five Technion Researchers Receive Israel Cancer Research Fund Grants

Congratulations to five Technion researchers who have been awarded prestigious grants from the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF), supporting innovative research that brings us closer to more effective and personalized cancer treatments.

The recipients are:
🔹 Prof. Irit Ben-Aharon – studying the long-term effects of chemotherapy during pregnancy on offspring
🔹 Dr. Ido Livneh – investigating the cellular "backup systems" that allow cancer cells to survive treatment
🔹 Dr. Shira Landau – developing a groundbreaking heart-and-cancer-on-a-chip model to explore the links between cardiovascular disease and cancer
🔹 Prof. David (Dedi) Meiri – advancing research on a novel cannabis-derived molecule that could improve treatment for estrogen-dependent cancers
🔹 Prof. Tomer Shlomi – using AI, metabolomics, and proteomics to uncover new therapeutic targets for gastrointestinal cancers

Since 1975, ICRF has invested nearly $100 million in Israeli cancer research, helping scientists make discoveries that improve and save lives.

Mechanical Engineering Meets the AI Era ⚙️🤖

After an eight-year hiatus, the Technion welcomed more than 650 researchers, engineers, students, and industry leaders to the 36th National Mechanical Engineering Conference.

Held under the theme "Mechanical Engineering in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," the conference explored how AI is transforming engineering through cutting-edge research, industry collaboration, and innovation. Highlights included a keynote by Technion alumnus Mooly Eden, the presentation of the International Gold Medal in Tribology to Prof. Izhak Etsion, and outstanding student research showcased in the poster competition.

🏆 Congratulations to Dr. Noga Ron-Harel of the Faculty of Biology on receiving the 2026 Daniel Shiran Prize, awarded annually to an outstanding Technion researcher in biomedicine.

Dr. Ron-Harel's pioneering research explores how aging affects the immune system and the metabolism of T cells. Her groundbreaking work is advancing our understanding of immune aging and could help pave the way for new strategies to strengthen immunity in older adults.

The Daniel Shiran Prize honors the memory of Master Sergeant Daniel Shiran z"l while celebrating research that improves human health and quality of life.
