The Hidden “Crosses” Inside Prague’s Synagogues

Standing inside the Klaus Synagogue in Prague, Czechia, you can notice something fascinating about the ceiling architecture. The roof is built with vaulted arches — and when one arch intersects another, it naturally creates the shape of a cross.

But in synagogues, crosses belong to churches, not Jewish houses of prayer.

That’s why the Jewish communities and architects went to remarkable lengths to visually soften, cover, or decorate the intersections so they wouldn’t stand out as crosses. You can see this not only here in the Klaus Synagogue, but also in the Altneuschul and the Maisel Synagogue. All of them followed the same architectural sensitivity and tradition.

It’s a small detail — but it says a lot about Jewish identity, aesthetics, and life in medieval and early modern Europe.

Auschwitz-Birkenau: One of the Pools Built Inside the Camp

In Auschwitz II-Birkenau, there were multiple pools spread throughout the camp. Nobody swam in them. They were built because most of Birkenau was made up of wooden barracks, and the N***s feared fires breaking out and spreading quickly through the camp.

When you walk through Birkenau, you see how everything was planned in advance. Every section of the camp had a purpose. Every zone was organized with chilling precision. The roads, the barracks, the rail lines, the separation of areas — all of it was designed with meticulous efficiency.

That deep planning, the calculations, the logistics, the thinking ahead — this is part of what made the Holocaust so devastating and capable of murdering millions of people with such horrifying efficiency.

The camp itself reveals not chaos, but calculated organization.
