Saving the Stones: Practical Conservation Training Internship
An immersive experience in cultural heritage of Israel! The program is instructed in English.

Saving The Stones is a practical training program designed to give the foundation needed to begin a career in conservation of built heritage and historic preservation. It intended for participants from inter-disciplinary backgrounds such as: archaeology, architecture, historic preservation, art history, urban planning, civil engineering, and other related fields. The program gives recent graduate

s and young professionals in these fields a unique opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge so as to enable them to begin a career in practical conservation. The Program is taught by some of Israel’s leading conservation specialists, archaeologists, engineers, and architects of the highest professional level. Most of them work within the framework of the Israel Antiquities Authority and other conservation organizations and academic institutes. Through hands-on experiences on various archaeological heritage sites in Israel, participants have a unique opportunity to learn, work, and live in the historic city of Old Acre, and embrace the diversity of famous historical sites in the Land of Israel. Held at the campus of the International Conservation Center - Citta' di Roma, in an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Acre, Israel. Acre is an historic port city on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, and is home to remains of world cultures including the Hellenistic, Roman, Mamluk, Crusaders, Ottoman Empire, and the British Mandate. Program objectives:
- Gain better understanding of conservation procedures and theoretical basis;
- Acquire skills for practical conservation in order to apply them on all scale projects;
- Get acquainted with built heritage and history of Israel and the Mediterranean region;
- Join current conservation teams and experts to engage in active heritage sites;
- Develop a greater understanding of the underlying meaning connected to the rehabilitation of an historic living city by living within the historic city, side-by-side with local residents. Course structure:
A) 10/12 weeks of basic studies which include theoretical and practical documentation, and treatment planning through to field work and application. B) Optional: 6 weeks of practicum during which the knowledge acquired by the basic training program is applied through apprenticeship, and thorough personal research is conducted on an historical monument/site in Old City of Acre. A certificate of completion, issued by Israel Antiquities Authority and ICCROM will be awarded to participants at the end of the the course.

First 10 days of Saving The Stones 2016 are behind us.
Here is a short summery of what our students been doing here in Akko since their arrival at the International Conservation Center:
- welcoming and orientation tour in Akko
- safety in hights seminar
- group discussions about the meaning of "conservation"
- documentation methods (graphic sketching and photo elaboration)
- weekend activity in local artist's house, and much much more.

We've only getting started so keep following us.
