Mondays we get into nature to set us up for the week ✨

We had so much fun playing treehouse in today's Ot session.
While having all the fun this child was moving and working her whole body. She strengthened her core and upper body while pulling herself up.
She maintained her balance on an unstable and moving surface. She had to figure out how to position her body and how to sequence her movements.
She regulated herself with some proprioceptive and vestibular input.
She got a little frustrated when she did not manage to to get up on her first attempt but tried again anyway because she had fun. When she made it to the top she was so very proud of herself, and so was I 🥰

The children decided to make local landmark Vinegar Hill from our homemade kinetic sand!

We talked about the battle of Vinegar Hill (history) made the kinetic sand (science) made the hill (art) talked about the walkways around it (engineering) and what you can see from the top (geography) but from the outside it just looked like we were playing at the tuff tray 🥰

🌱 Calling on our local community! 🌱

At NEON Ireland, we’re growing something special: a hands-on learning environment for our neurodivergent students. To make it happen, we’re looking for a few local affiliate partners who can lend a hand (or a field!).

Here’s what we need right now:

🐴 Grazing land — large enough for 2 ponies. If you have a spare paddock or know someone who does, we’d love to chat.

🌿 Brush removal — we have piles of cleared brush that need to be hauled away. If you have a trailer, a tractor, or just a strong back and a few hours, we’d be so grateful.

🤝 And anyone else who thinks they can contribute! Maybe you have a skill, a resource, or a connection that could help our school. We’re all ears.

This is a chance to be part of something meaningful for local young people, and to see your contribution make a real difference.

🌈 So… what does an OT actually do in a child-led classroom?

When people hear Occupational Therapy, they might imagine a child being taken away for a one-to-one session.

And yes, sometimes that happens.

But in a child-led classroom, OT can look very different. 💛

Our OT might be watching, listening, wondering and asking questions:

💭 Why is this transition so difficult?
💭 What is this child communicating through their actions?
💭 What is making participation difficult?
💭 How could we make this activity easier?
💭 What could we change about the environment?

Sometimes the answer isn’t to change the child.

The question is never, “How do we change the child?”

The question is:

🌈 “How can we change the environment?”

Maybe that means:

🔇 Less noise
💡 Less bright lighting
🏃 More opportunities for movement
🪑 Different ways to sit
🌿 Access to quiet spaces
🧸 Sensory supports
✨ More choice and autonomy
💬 Making space for every form of communication
❤️ Less pressure and fewer unnecessary demands

Because participation doesn’t always mean asking a child to adapt to what we’ve created.

Sometimes we need to adapt what we’ve created for the child.

That’s OT too. 💛

At NEON Ireland, our goal is not to change children to fit the environment.

It’s to create environments where children can be themselves, communicate, participate and thrive. 🌈

In our OT club this week we explored texture with pretend worms and mud 🐛🪱🍃

The children had so much fun with the water slime in particular. We can’t wait to see you all again next week!

Coming up on this weekend’s Saturday Morning Live: Mareike Bartel & Rachel Connolly will be live in studio to explain more about Enniscorthy’s newest independent primary school, catering for neurodivergent children; Enniscorthy mother Megan Byrne will tell listeners of her call to try and enhance road safety in housing estates in the town, following a road traffic incident involving her son Liam; Traitors Ireland contestant Seán Cooke will recount his experience on the popular TV show, and Chair of ‘My Legacy’, Niall O’Sullivan will be on to encourage people in Wexford to consider charitable gifts when writing their Wills, as charities have seen a drop in regular donations. All of that, from 10.30, on Saturday morning 📻
