As the Leaving Certificate Music exams come to an end, I would like to congratulate all of my piano and singing students who have worked so hard throughout this journey.
A special congratulations to Roisín, Lily, Sarah, Oisín, Leela, Kyle and Emily, and also to those who trusted me to help and guide them through parts of the course in the final stages of their preparation. It has been a privilege to be part of your musical journey.
I am incredibly proud of the commitment, resilience and dedication each of you has shown. Preparing for the Leaving Certificate is no small task, and you should be very proud of everything you have achieved.
Now that the exams are behind you, take some time to relax, recharge and enjoy a well-earned rest. You have earned it.
As you move on to the next chapter, remember that music is a gift that stays with you for life. While our lessons may be finished, my support and encouragement for you will always remain. My door is always open, and I would be delighted to welcome you back in the future, whether for lessons, music, or simply a chat.
I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to Fintan Finn of Midleton for his exceptional support and tuition to several of my Leaving Certificate students, including my own daughter and nephew. His generosity, expertise and dedication have been invaluable. I simply cannot thank him enough for the time, effort and encouragement he has given, and I have no doubt that the results will reflect the hard work he has invested in helping these students achieve their very best.
On a personal note, I am especially proud of my daughter, Aisling, and my nephew Eoghan, who also completed their Leaving Certificate Music exams today. Watching you grow as musicians and young adults has been a privilege, and I couldn't be prouder of all you have accomplished. This is a moment to celebrate, and I hope you each take time to appreciate just how far you've come.
Wishing each of you every happiness and success in whatever path lies ahead. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey.
With pride and best wishes,

🎹❤️This summer, I'll be holding some fun composition classes for my students, especially after seeing how much they absolutely loved the latest pieces we've been creating together.

Since publishing my first piano composition book, The Bumblebees Escape (link on my page), which features pieces I wrote from the age of 14 onwards, I've been inspired to compose many more works for my students. Recently, I've written a whole new collection during our lessons together, including seven traditional-style pieces featuring polkas, jigs, and a slip jig.

I compose the music, and then we use AI to create the illustrations that bring each piece to life. The children absolutely love the whole creative process.

Some of my students have even started writing their own music, which is amazing .

Olivia created an entire book of her own songs and piano compositions, with a little guidance from me, while my good friend Brian Hughes kindly typesetted my handwritten manuscripts into the computer. Millie and Mollie are currently creating their own books, inspired by Olivia's work, and Elsa is also thoroughly enjoying composing her own music.

There is honestly nothing I enjoy more than helping young musicians discover their creativity, and this has become one of the most rewarding projects I've ever been involved in.

My hope is to continue composing many more pieces and, at my next student concert, to have a programme made up entirely of original compositions—both mine and those written by my students. Every piece will be performed by the students themselves, which makes it even more special.

Neuroplasticity and Piano Learning: How Practice Shapes the Musical Brain

When a child first sits at the piano, even the simplest melody can feel like a challenge. Their fingers hesitate, their eyes search for the correct notes, and every movement requires concentration. Yet with regular practice, those same movements gradually become smooth, natural, and almost effortless. This remarkable transformation is made possible through something called neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to adapt, reorganise, and strengthen connections through experience and repetition. In music education, it is one of the most fascinating and important processes behind learning an instrument.

Building Pathways in the Brain

Every time a student practises a scale, chord progression, or short musical phrase, the brain is creating and strengthening neural pathways. These pathways connect hearing, sight, memory, movement, rhythm, and emotional response.

At the beginning of learning, those pathways are weak and unfamiliar. A child may need to think carefully about every finger movement:

Which key comes next?

Which finger should I use?

How hard should I press the note?

With repetition, however, the brain begins to recognise the pattern. Signals travel more efficiently, coordination improves, and movements become faster and more accurate.

This is why piano teachers place such importance on consistent fi*****ng. When a child uses the same fingers each time they practise a passage, the brain strengthens one reliable pathway instead of creating several competing ones.

From Conscious Effort to Automatic Playing

One of the most exciting aspects of neuroplasticity is the transition from conscious learning to automatic skill.

At first, a student must actively think through each movement. Over time, repeated practice allows those actions to move into procedural memory, the same kind of memory used for riding a bicycle or tying shoelaces.

Eventually, the hands begin to “remember” where to go.

This is why experienced pianists can often play complex passages while focusing on musical expression, dynamics, and emotion rather than simply finding the notes.

Why Repetition Matters

Children sometimes wonder why teachers ask them to repeat scales or short exercises so many times. The answer lies in how the brain learns.

Each repetition strengthens neural connections and increases the speed and efficiency of communication within the brain. Scientists also believe that repeated practice supports the development of myelin, a protective coating around nerve fibres that helps signals travel more quickly.

In simple terms:

Practice does not only improve performance — it physically changes the brain.

Music and Lifelong Learning

The benefits of musical neuroplasticity extend far beyond the piano.

Studies suggest that music education can support:

concentration and focus,

memory development,

coordination,

listening skills,

emotional expression,

creativity,

and problem-solving abilities.

For young learners especially, piano study encourages patience, resilience, and confidence as they experience the rewards of consistent effort.

A Beautiful Example of Human Learning

Watching a child progress from hesitant first notes to fluent playing is more than musical development — it is the brain adapting and growing in real time.

Every practice session helps build stronger pathways, deeper understanding, and greater musical freedom.

Neuroplasticity reminds us that talent is not simply something we are born with. Through repetition, guidance, and encouragement, the brain continuously develops new abilities.

At the piano, every correctly repeated pattern becomes part of a larger transformation:

the shaping of both the musician and the mind.

Music Teacher Profile for those not familiar with what it is I do.
I am a fully qualified music teacher with over 30 years of experience, holding a Bachelor of Music (BMus) from University College Cork, an ALCM Diploma in Piano, and an ATCL Performance Diploma in Singing from Trinity College London.
I teach piano from beginner to diploma level, children and adults, specialising in classical training and preparation for Royal Irish Academy of Music graded exams, while also incorporating traditional Irish music on the piano, jazz, chart hits, and modern styles to keep lessons enjoyable and engaging. I also teach singing (classical and musical theatre), and composition, encouraging creativity through activities such as writing original music and helping children create their own music book.
During my college years, I was also a member of the National Irish Youth Choir, gaining valuable ensemble and performance experience at a national level. I have enjoyed considerable success in classical singing competitions over the years, winning multiple awards including the Todd Cup for Oratorio, Operatic Cups at Feis competitions, the Alex Redshaw Memorial Perpetual Trophy, the Bel Canto Trophy and The Mac Donagh Bursary and Trophy for Recital.
I have extensive experience and interest in working with children with ADHD and autism, and I teach both children and adults in a supportive and structured environment.
I am an award-winning teacher, having received the Royal Irish Academy of Music Spotlight Teacher Award (2025), and my students regularly perform at the New Ross International Piano Festival and in Feis competitions. I also specialise in preparing students for Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate practical exams.
Alongside teaching, I am a composer and performer. I have released two CDs and published my piano book The Bumblebee’s Escape (2024), available at The Book Centre Waterford, and locally in David Walsh Office and School Supplies, and many of my compositions have been selected for Royal Irish Academy of Music exam syllabi.
My aim is to inspire confidence, self esteem, creativity, originality, and a lifelong love of music in every student and teaching them to never set limits and they are capable of anything they work hard enough for.
