Attached is a link to a video about the good mothering capabilities of the Charollais ewes.
Excellent ewe with good carcass and body conditioning scores.
They aren't far behind the texel for muscling characteristics (there are studies about the Myostatin gene and how this affects muscling differentiation within breeds which is a good read)

We dosed 121 lambs with levafas diamond over the weekend which concludes all our dosing for the lambs (total of 550+ lambs dosed).
Heading into winter now and we are feeding these lambs ad lib concentrates until they reach the desired slaughter weight then they will be sold (~45kg live weight)

Myself and my father bought 37 lambs from a neighbour over the weekend. We dipped, dosed (levafas diamond) and gave a cobalt tablet to them to freshen them up before we put them on concentrates and fatten them until they're 45kg before slaughtering 🐏

The Lleyn sheep breeds are extremely hardy, prolific and easy lambing which are ideal for adapting to the weather conditions and thrive in breeding management systems within your flock.

In sheep, the term is used to describe chronic infectious conditions that are insidious in onset and/or spread and have a huge and increasing impact on the productivity and welfare of the entire flock.

Some of our purebred mountainy Rams (the money makers as we call them) that were left off with the mountainy ewes a few days ago. Fingers crossed they perform as well as they look πŸ‘€πŸ€ž

Great to see the hill ewes being involved in the evolution of EID (Electronic Identification) as well as the lowland breeds with the help of Sheep Ireland. πŸ‘

A busy weekend on the home farm as we let our mountain ewes off with the rams. πŸ‘ Wheen choosing breeding ewes we follow the 3 T's approach; teeth, toes and teats, and also BCS (body conditioning score). All these must be sound for a successful breeding season. Yesterday, 14/11/20 we let off 10 rams to around 423 ewes so we hope for these to lamb down on the 8/4/21. The breakdown is as follows;

45 ewes 1 charolais rams

90 hoggets 2 charolais

83 ewes 2 mountain rams

80 ewes 2 mountain rams

45 ewes 1 mountain ram

45 ewes 1 charolais ram

35 ewes 1 blue Leicester ram

We also let off a further 4 rams to 155 lowland cross ewes a few weeks ago on the 25/10/20, so they will lamb down around paddy's day. The breakdown is as follows

40 ewes 1 suffolk ram

80 ewes 2 charolais ram

35 ewes 1 charolais ram

The total amounts were; 578 ewes : 14 rams.

For those who aren't aware, we also have a handful of suckler cows (22), a bull and a couple of weanling left that weren't fit for slaughter 2 months ago aswell as 10 bucket fed bullocks. The weanlings are housed since last week and the cows and bull are allowed to go in and out of the shed.πŸƒ

Here is a new galvanised crush only put up recently on our second farm only a 5 minute drive from our main farm. Saves us the hassle of squeezing them behind a gate we've all been there πŸƒπŸ˜³πŸ€«
