For students taking subjects in the College of Arts and Celtic Studies
Drop-In Writing Support Sessions start next week

If you would like some help with improving your essay-writing skills, come along to one of these drop-in sessions (timetable is below).

These sessions operate on a first come, first served basis and are usually over-subscribed, so if you don't get seen the first time you show up, try again at another time.

Also, do consider attending on the half hour rather than the hour, usually much more busy (i.e. turn up at 11.30 rather than 11am). The sessions start next Tuesday and will run until Thursday of week 6 so get along to them as soon as you can if you need help with essay writing.

Please note that these sessions are not subject specific: your tutor will talk to you about how to plan an essay, how to organise it, how to start or end it, how to use references and quotations, and so on. But your tutor will not grade draft essays or talk to you about specific content. These sessions are about academic essay writing skills.

FAQ:

1. Why can’t I pre-book?
The reason you can't pre-book a slot is that we tried this system before and 30% of those who booked did not turn up for their session so the slot was wasted and others were blocked from using it.

2. Why go to one of these half-hour sessions?
Here is the type of feedback that we got to the question 'what aspects of this clinic did you find most useful?’ from some of the 100 students who availed of this free service last semester:

• 'Advice on introductions and conclusions'
• 'Information on how to structure an essay'
• 'Explanation about the importance of a thesis statement'
• 'The one-to-one aspect'
• 'Everything: I could ask about anything I needed and the feedback was great'
• 'How to take notes'

3. How do I find these one-to-one writing support sessions?
Just turn up at ROOM 130a in the James Joyce Library at any of the times/dates in the timetable below. To get to Room 130a go in the library main entrance, turn left, go through towards the short loan collection and follow the signs on the door to your left.

4. What do I need to bring with me?
A marked up copy of an essay that has been graded OR any set of essay titles that you're working on at the moment

5. Do I have to pay for the service?
No: the half-hour session with an experienced tutor is free.

Arts students are you interested in a non-credit bearing Certificate in Skills for Working Life?

The UCD Career Development Centre are running a non-credit bearing Certificate in Skills for Working Life programme which is intended to provide students with an insight into some key skills employers tell UCD Career Development Centre they need students to recognise, develop and relate effectively to the graduate workplace.

Students will gain an appreciation of how to manage, effectively, the graduate recruitment process, how to be effective in the workplace and how to be active in future career development. Topics include interactive sessions on areas such as teamwork and leadership, emotional intelligence in the workplace, projecting a positive image - in person and online - and making effective job applications and advice on how to succeed at job interviews for internship or graduate positions.

The course comprises eight weekly informal and interactive sessions each lasting up to two hours (usually around 1hr 40min). During these sessions, students are able to ask questions and interact with recruiters and learn from their experience.

Students who attend a minimum of six sessions will be awarded the Career Development Centre non-credit bearing Certificate in Skills for Working Life at a presentation of certificates in late April/early May.
