📚 Honouring a legacy that changed Ireland

Kerry ETB recently hosted a special portrait presentation honouring former Minister for Education Donogh O’Malley, whose introduction of free post-primary education opened doors for generations of young people across Ireland.

The portrait, created by artist Declan Chambers, was formally presented by Michael O’Dwyer.

For rural counties like Kerry, O’Malley’s reforms were life changing. Free post-primary education and expanded school transport made it possible for many young people to stay in education and create new opportunities for themselves and their families.

Nearly 60 years later, his legacy continues through the thousands of learners who access education and training opportunities across Kerry every year.

The event was a reminder of the power of education to change lives and strengthen communities.

👗♻️ Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí reaches Junk Kouture World Final

Huge congratulations to Isabel Jensen and Isla and Faye Nic Mhuiris from Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí, one of our Kerry ETB schools, whose design Net-Zero has secured a place in the 2026 Junk Kouture World Final. 👏

The students represented their school at the Dublin City Final in The Helix, where 69 student designs from across Ireland were showcased.

Created entirely from recycled and repurposed materials, Net-Zero was selected as one of just 12 designs to progress to the World Final.

Junk Kouture gives students the chance to combine creativity, sustainability and teamwork through fashion design, and this achievement is a fantastic recognition of the students’ talent and hard work.

Best of luck to Isabel, Isla and Faye at the World Final. 🌍✨

🎨✨ Kerry College Creative Arts Exhibition now open at Siamsa Tíre

Kerry College officially opened this year’s Creative Arts Exhibition, WORK, on Thursday evening in Siamsa Tíre.

The exhibition showcases the creativity and talent of learners across a wide range of creative programmes, with work in:

🎨 Painting
🖌️ Print-making
🎮 Games Design
📱 Digital Design
🎬 Animation
🗿 Sculpture
💻 Interaction Design

The opening also featured live music performances from Kerry College learners in Music Performance and Sound & Production. 🎶

🛠️ Huge congratulations to our Kerry College apprentice Petra O’Flaherty on being crowned Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2026. 👏

Petra, an apprentice stonemason studying at Kerry College, beat more than 3,000 apprentices from across the UK and Ireland to take the title.

Originally from Blessington, Co. Wicklow, Petra is also the first registered female stonemason in Ireland in more than 30 years.

As part of her win, Petra receives a €10,000 prize package of tools, training and technology, along with €2,000 in vouchers for her college in Kerry.

Petra spoke about her love of working with Irish stone and her hope that her journey will encourage others to consider apprenticeships and careers in traditional crafts.

This is a fantastic achievement and a proud moment for Kerry College and Kerry ETB.

🎻 Music Generation Kerry performs at Siamsa Tíre

Young musicians from Music Generation Kerry, a Kerry Education and Training Board project, recently performed on stage at Siamsa Tíre. 🎶
They shared the stage with international group Trio Bohémo as part of a concert marking 40 years of Music Network.

The performance featured the Music Generation Kerry String Ensemble and Cór Seoda Tíre, playing to a full house.

A highlight of the night was The Unconquerable Soul by Rhona Clarke, bringing together choir, string ensemble and piano trio in one performance.

In the weeks leading up to the concert, students worked closely with their tutors, choral specialist Alan Leech and conductor Amy Ryan, including a joint rehearsal with Trio Bohémo.

It was a strong example of the opportunities available to young people across Kerry to learn, perform and take part in live music.

♟️ Checkmate success for Coláiste Gleann Lí

Well done to students from Coláiste Gleann Lí, one of our 8 Kerry ETB post primary schools, on their strong performance at an inter schools chess competition in Abbeyfeale. 👏

Competing against 40 teams, one Coláiste Gleann Lí team finished joint first in the Major Champions section and now qualifies for the All Ireland Chess Finals in Nenagh this May.

In the individual competition, Maryna Petrenko placed second out of 80 competitors, narrowly missing first place, and also qualifies for the finals.

A great achievement for all involved, and a credit to the students who represented their school so well.
