♥️This is why myself and created the .i.r.m.approach!!
♥️So what would F.I.R.M. parenting actually look like in a situation like this? ✈️
The F.I.R.M. approach is the middle ground between parenting that is too harsh and parenting that becomes too permissive. It allows us to understand what might be going on underneath our child’s behaviour, while still being the adult who holds the boundary.
F = FAIR
Is what I’m asking fair for this child, at this age, in these circumstances? What else might be going on here developmentally, emotionally or sensory-wise?
I = INTENTIONAL
What is my intention right now? Am I reacting out of frustration, or responding in a way that teaches, regulates and knows what’s important?
R = REGULATED
What’s happening in my child’s nervous system and mine? Regulation doesn’t mean removing the boundary. It helps us support a child through the feelings that come with it.
M = MODELLED
What am I modelling in this moment? clear boundaries, empathy, problem-solving and how to handle hard things are all learned through what we do as much as what we say
