👶 A useful First Aid update for Early Years services
There’s an important change for crèches, preschools, childminders and Early Years teams from September 2026.
Tusla’s updated Early Years guidance now recognises the new PHECC First Aid Essentials – Paediatric First Aid qualification alongside First Aid Response (FAR).
That’s a significant change because, until now, FAR was generally the qualification Early Years providers looked towards to meet this requirement.
The new option is a one-day, paediatric-focused course, covering the emergencies childcare staff are most likely to face — including CPR, choking, AED use, childhood injuries and medical emergencies.
What hasn’t changed?
Your service still needs to make sure appropriately trained staff are available whenever children are in your care, including on outings, and your overall first-aid arrangements should reflect your staffing, numbers, risks and the needs of the children.
And importantly, FAR is still recognised. This is an additional option — not a replacement for FAR.
If you run an Early Years service and you’re wondering which course is actually appropriate for your staff, feel free to get in touch. I’m always happy to explain the options without making it more complicated than it needs to be. 😊
