The presence of the invasive Demon shrimp has now been confirmed in Portumna. This species poses a serious threat to our freshwater ecosystems, and urgent action is needed to prevent it spreading further - especially around Portumna, Lough Derg, the Shannon waterways and across Galway.

Anyone using the water, or carrying out works near it, is asked to follow strict biosecurity measures. The most effective approach is Check, Clean, Dry:

• Check equipment and clothing for any plant or animal material
• Clean thoroughly to remove debris
• Dry completely before moving to another water body

Simple steps that can help protect our waterways.
