Adopting a broad interpretation of the theme of ‘extremity’, with its multifarious meanings and implications, from the material to the ideological, from the word’s connotations as ‘catastrophe’ or ‘limit event’ to its denotation as ‘the farthest point’, Sibéal’s 2019 Annual Conference considers how feminism can respond to extremity in its various forms. This may include a feminist response to those ‘living on the edge’, the rise of extreme ideologies, as well as the relationship between feminism and extremity. Taking an intersectional approach, this Sibéal 2019 interdisciplinary Annual Conference invites presentations from those working within the broad remit of gender studies and feminism on a range of themes pertaining to activism and academia.

BREAKING
The NIO has issued interim guidelines for the period between decriminalisation on October 21st 2019 and regulations in March 2020.

Key points -

Sections 58 and 59 of the 1861 OAPA will be repealed so no new charges can be brought against people who have an abortion or medical professionals.
Ongoing cases will not be continued - the trial expected in November will not happen.
The 1945 Act will still be in force. This puts an upper term limit on abortion, unless it is to save the pregnant person's life in 1945 this was 28 weeks and is now interpreted as 24 weeks.
There will be no new NHS service introduced before March 2020. Doctors will still be required to act if there is a long term or permanent risk to life or health.
BIG CHANGE doctors may choose to carry out abortions where there is a fatal or serious fetal anomaly in the interim following clinical guidelines. This is huge.
Another BIG CHANGE
Doctors will be able to tell people about treatment in England. The central booking system will stay in place until provision is up and running in NI AND all travel expenses and accommodation will be funded after 22nd October not means tested.
There will be conscientious objection with a duty to refer on for treatment in line with GMC guidelines.
People who use pills bought online in the interim period can tell medical professionals without being reported, as there is no crime to report. They can be honest, and doctors can get all the information they need to trrat them.

There will be a consultation on regulations launched after 22 Oct.
There will be further guidelines on implementing the remaining CEDAW recomendations.

All this will come into effect provided Stormont doesn't return by 21st October.

Sibéal runs an annual essay competition for final year undergraduates. There is no set theme for this competition; rather, candidates are encouraged to submit work in the area of gender and/or feminist studies. Submissions can be within any discipline in the field.

There will be a prize of 50 euros/ 50 pounds book token for the winning essay, along with free registration at the annual Sibéal conference to be held in November 2019 at NUI Galway. The winning candidate will be given the opportunity to present the essay at the conference.

The competition is open to all final year undergraduate students in Ireland, Northern Ireland and further afield.

Essays should be 2,500 words maximum.

Please do not include any identifiable information on your essay submission.

Electronic submissions should be submitted to [email protected] by 26 July 2019.
