Recently, I posted here about a student who wanted to feel less overwhelmed. Yesterday, we really got to the root of what happened. This girl is in fourth class. When she was in first class, a teacher completely shut her down and shamed her for not being able to answer a question in class. This girl internalised this and for the last few years, she has frozen if she is asked a question. She felt that she 'always got her words wrong.' We worked together to help her realise that it was in fact, her teacher who got their words wrong. I reminded her that grown ups make mistakes too. I am so relieved for her to be no longer carrying this. The amount of adults whom I work with who tell me about being shut down by an adult when they were a child. And they then carry this with them every time they speak.

Delighted that this girl will hopefully be free of that now and will take pride in her own beautiful voice.

A dream message to receive from one of my 1-1 students ❤️

Speech exercises are a crucial part of my Speech & Drama classes.

This sometimes involves building on the amazing work done by an SLT.

The key is to make speech exercises fun & let children know WHY we do them.

I tell them that people have to hear all the cool things they have to say.
Or that to think of their favourite actor or singer & how they all do speech warm ups.
Or how a footballer warms up before a match!

Then it makes sense to them! ✨

Sometimes parents ask me how do they explain Speech and Drama to a child starting with me?

I say to make it relatable to their interests.

Many of my students are not looking to be actors but love the creativity side of it.

But I do have a lot of students who are interested in having podcasts, radio shows or who love sport!

So I say to them to think of their favourite sports person, broadcaster, YouTuber etc.
All these people have to speak clearly to be understood on whatever platform they use! They use their Speech and Drama skills.

I often get students to write an acceptance speech for their future awards, medals, trophies, you name it!

And that's how they get it!

Make it relatable ✨

If you have an audition, speech or presentation on the horizon, this tip is for you.

Always, always, always rehearse OUT LOUD first.

In the last week, I've had four boys say to me " I rehearsed it out loud in my head. "

This does not count. 😊

Rehearse it out loud and I'll guarantee you that you'll find yourself wanting to make edits and tweaks.

That's much better than being in the middle of your speech or audition and being caught off guard.

Break a leg🙌

I told the students that they could bring in one thing. Much respect to the student who brought in a six foot teddy.
