“On Tuesday the 15th of September, the TYs, accompanied by Mr Quill, Mrs Hodnett and Claire, set off to Tullamore, Co. Offaly, to attend the National Ploughing Championships. They left on the bus at 6:30am from Macroom and in no time they had arrived in Tullamore town. They had a brilliant day doing interviews with food stalls for their Food Studies class, enjoyed shopping and gathering freebies from stalls to take home. They went on amusement rides and enjoyed a great day with great weather to discover all that the Ploughing had to offer. They stopped in Cashel for a break before arriving home at 7:00pm.”

“On Friday the 11th of September the transition year students received a very informative workshop, from Sorcha Mallen, who deals with navigating conflict and its resolution. They went through different scenarios with Sorcha and learned how people react in these situations. They did a few activities, where they learned how different people react when being confronted with a problem that they encounter. They learned how there are two types of approaches when it comes to confrontation. The pufferfish , that is direct and the chameleon which dislikes confrontation. Ms Hickey’s 6th Year Geography students had a fantastic day out at Killarney National Park on Friday the 18th, completing their Leaving Certificate Geographical Investigation.

Thankfully, the weather held up well and allowed the girls to complete all of their fieldwork activities along the Owengarriff River. They investigated a range of geographical factors, including the river channel profile, index of sinuosity, and the size and shape of the river’s bedload.

The students used the data collected from each activity to analyse how erosion, deposition and transportation have helped to shape and form a meander at their chosen site.

This is always a worthwhile opportunity for the girls to put their classroom learning into practice and experience Geography beyond the classroom. A great day of learning, fieldwork and exploration!
