The Centre for Irish-German Studies was founded in 1997 at the University of Limerick to support research dealing with irish-german relations.

Congratulations to Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin on the publication of his award-winning novel Madame Lazare. Originally written in Irish, it has now been translated into German by Elvira Veselinović, as well as into Serbian and Estonian. Future editions are forthcoming in Polish, Romanian and Macedonian. It was published in Germany by Kröner Verlag this year. The novel has done fantastically well in Germany and has now been longlisted for the Hot List 2026 of books from smaller independent publishing houses. This is a great achievement, and we wish him all the best!

Today will see the start of a series of evenings at the Irish Film Institute in Dublin dedicated to rediscovering the German journalist, filmmaker and author Margit Wagner, together with her films on Ireland (a more compact version will take place in the Belltable Theatre in Limerick on 4 November). What a beautiful morning in UL for the last day of the European Sports for All Games as part of the European Presidency. It was great to meet some of the participants, including the German dance group Grüne Funken, and also try out some of the games. Did you know there are currently 12 GAA clubs (Gaelic Football, Hurling and Camogie) in Germany, including senior teams and youth clubs. There are also national teams that compete at the GAA World Games.
But today we want to wish all the best to the Limerick senior hurling team competing in the all Ireland final against Galway.

We just had the pleasure of running a highly successful 5th Conference of the UL/UU cooperation, “Evolving Relationships – Ireland, the UK and Beyond,” held this year in collaboration with the Centre for British Studies at Humboldt‑Universität zu Berlin.
Moving beyond our usual locations of Limerick and Belfast, and benefiting from the splendid hospitality of the GBZ and the Irish Embassy (as well as the outstanding support of the DAAD), added a special and enriching dimension to this year’s conference.
Our sincere thanks go to all speakers for their stimulating presentations and the thoughtful, engaging discussions they inspired. Your contributions made the conference both intellectually vibrant and deeply rewarding. Last Tuesday, the Centre for Irish-German Studies hosted their research day in The Globe at UL. We had a range of interesting research projects, from Irish classical music to traditional Irish music in Germany, Sean O’Casey and his time in East Berlin, the artist Imogen Stuart and Irish author Elizabeth Shaw who wrote children’s books in the GDR, early women professors in German, primary school material to teach German and newly discovered photographs of the Irish aid after WWII. Further discussions involved the Irish Council Presidency and showcased a lovely programme Gisela Holfter, director of CIGS, created in collaboration with many stakeholders in the city to celebrate the Limerick-Germany pairing. The day finished with a brainstorming session on the upcoming 30-year anniversary of the Centre and was filled with conversations and networking amongst our members.
