We’ve been sold a very specific image of what a “real” yogi looks like, eats, and acts like—and honestly? It’s exhausting. This pressure is particularly prevelant in ashtanga yoga.
Here’s why I’ve dropped these rules and stepped into what actually feels good:

💫Ditching restrictive diets. The yoga world loves to police food—from requiring vegetarianism or raw veganism to glorifying eating as little as possible. Food is fuel and joy, not a test of spiritual purity.

💫Afternoon practice > 4:00 AM alarms. I spent years waking up at 6:00 AM (and even 3:30 AM in Mysore!) just to get on the mat. Honoring my sleep and practicing when my body actually wants to move is far healthier and allows me to live in harmony with the world around me.

💫Body size ≠ yoga ability. Fatphobia in yoga is rampant. I have students of all shapes and sizes and I call BS. Body size tells very little about someone's strength, dedication, or capability on the mat.

💫You don't need to practice 6 days a week. The shame around taking rest days is toxic. You are still a "real yogi" if you practice twice a week, once a week, or whenever it serves your life.

💫Rejecting ableism on the mat. "Practice and all is coming" sounds nice until it’s used to make people feel like failures for anatomical differences. Every body is built differently, and pushing through limits isn't spirituality—it's harmful.

What’s a "yoga rule" you’ve decided to stop following? Drop it in the comments 👇

🌟 People often think that practicing yoga means being passive somehow. But I truly believe that ashtanga has taught me to be a fighter and take up a fair amount of space in this world. I don't take what's not mine but I don't let other people take what's mine either.

🌟 I remember being in Mysore and all the drama around getting a spot in the room as everyone scrambled for space. There were always too many people and too little room. Some people really hated this and would rather step back and practice in the changing rooms or in the hallway. They felt that others were demonstrating the worst of themselves. Others played dirty - skipped the queue, tricked their way in before others. Hopefully at some point they realised their own behaviour.

🌟 But what is the point of yoga if it doesn't teach us how to handle life's challenges? Have you heard the heard the expression "Give them the meat and they'll come back for the bones."? Some people will try to take advantage of you in this life and are happy to walk all over you to get what they want, without a thought for fairness. Your job is not to let them. People see conflict as negative but there's nothing negative about sticking up for yourself.

🌟 Can you think of a time when you had to stick up for yourself?

During the early days of COVID, I sent an email to everyone on my mailing list to let them know what was happening with my classes.

One reply caught me completely off guard.

A woman emailed back asking to be removed from my mailing list. She told me she didn't like my classes and wouldn't recommend me to anyone.

I remember feeling shocked. I tried to think back and work out who she was because I genuinely couldn't remember teaching her. For a while, I let her words get to me.

But eventually I realised something important: I'm not everyone's teacher.

Like many teachers, I've questioned myself. I've wondered whether I should change my teaching style, make it more accessible, more entertaining, more... popular.

But every time I've thought about changing, I've remembered how I felt when I first stepped into an Ashtanga class.

My overwhelming thought was: this is the real deal.

The practice felt honest, authentic and deeply rooted in its Indian origins. There was no attempt to dilute it or reshape it to make it more appealing. It simply was what it was.

That's the feeling I hope people have when they walk into my classes.

Not everyone will enjoy my teaching, and that's okay. I'd rather teach in a way that feels true to me than become a version of myself that I don't recognise.

Because popularity comes and goes.

What's real remains.

4 Things I Learned About Myself by Changing Career

In 2024, after 13 years of teaching yoga full-time, I made the decision to transition to a corporate role.

It was one of the biggest changes of my life. I was stepping into a completely different world, and along the way I learned a lot about what I need to feel happy and healthy.

Here are the four biggest lessons I've learned:

🤝 I need connection.
One of the biggest changes was not getting my social needs met at work.Suddenly, I was working with colleagues who had very different backgrounds and interests, and I didn't always feel like I had much in common with them. At times, it felt quite lonely.

Over time, I realised that I was expecting work to meet all of my social needs. It doesn't have to. Connection can come from friends, family, hobbies, and community just as much as it can from colleagues.

🚶 I need movement.
Sitting at a desk all day left me feeling agitated, so movement has become a non-negotiable part of my routine. Whether it's a walk before work, at lunchtime, or after work, I know I need to move to feel my best.

🧘 I need yoga.
My yoga practice has become essential for my mental wellbeing. I notice a huge difference in my mood on the days I make time for it, whether that's before or after work.

🌱 A change really is as good as a rest.
Sometimes I think I'm exhausted, but what I actually need is to step away from work and into a different environment. That change helps me reset and come back feeling more like myself.

Changing careers has taught me that success isn't just about the job you do—it's about creating a life that supports your wellbeing.

Have you ever learned something unexpected about yourself through a career or life change? I'd love to hear about it in the comments. 💙

Some simple tips for yoga teachers... 🤍

In a world where social media can make it feel like everyone else is thriving with full classes, it's worth remembering a few things.

✨ Being popular doesn't mean being better. Likes and followers don't define the quality of your teaching and neither do full classes. Do you want to please everyone or do you want to teach in a way that feels true to you? I've been teaching long enough to experience packed classes and empty classes. It's hard not to take it personally but it has very little to do with you.

✨ Other yoga teachers are your friends, not your rivals. There's room for all of us to grow, learn and support one another. Go to other teachers' classes. Make friends. Show you respect them. Rivalry is low vibrational energy.

✨ Act with an attitude of plenty, not scarcity. Tied in to the previous tip. We are all unique and will attract the students that resonate with us so there's no need to worry about there not being enough room for everyone.

✨ Stay humble. The practice is a lifelong journey, and there's always something new to learn. I often see newly qualified teachers stop going to classes. It can be a confusing time and going to class as a teacher can also feel quite vulnerable but it's what keeps us humble. You have to be a good student to be a good teacher.

Which tip resonates with you the most? I'd love to hear your thoughts below. 💛

Happiness is in the small moments, those situations that make you pause. It has been a year full of blessings so far but it's also left me wondering sometimes why those successes haven't necessarily brought me the joy I expected. Nothing this year has brought me the kind of happiness that lying in the sun until 7pm has or watching the most magnificent sunset. Here's to more warm summer nights, sunsets and sharing those times with loved ones. May we all pause and allow ourselves to soak it all up.
