Hello, my name is Dympna Tuohy and I am the lead for this research project. I am a registered general nurse and a lecturer in nursing at the University of Limerick. I have taught and been involved in nurse education for many years and I am particularly interested in older person nursing. I have been involved in several projects researching different aspects of ageing, all with the aim of understanding the goals, wishes and needs of older people. It is paramount for positive ageing that older people and nurses can understand each other and work together. I think this research, exploring whether discussion cafés help intergenerational learning is important and I am very much looking forward to working on this project.

Eileen is a lecturer in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Education and Health Sciences at the University of Limerick. Prior to entering academia, Eileen worked as a Registered Nurse (Intellectual Disability), with people with intellectual disabilities and their families in a variety of contexts and settings. Eileen is a BSc. (Nursing Studies) graduate of the University of Limerick, a PG Dip. (Nurse Education) and MSc. (Advanced Nursing Studies) graduate of the University of Ulster and a Doctor in Philosophy (PhD) graduate of Trinity College, Dublin.
Eileen’s research interests focus on developing quality practices to implement evidence-based approaches and initiatives facilitating health and wellbeing of adults with intellectual disabilities. Specific topic areas have focused on choice and control, autonomy, assisted decision-making, informed consent, person centred planning and inclusive research.

If you are over 65 would you like to take part in this research?

A team of researchers led by Dr Dympna Tuohy are carrying out this study. Dympna is a registered general nurse and a lecturer in nursing at the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Limerick.

To break down barriers and to help build links and understanding between generations it is useful to develop ways to increase intergenerational learning. This project aims to do this by holding an online discussion café between members of the older population and student nurses and by asking both older people and student nurses to complete an online survey about the experience.
