Changes are coming!
The 1st November 2026 learner permit changes will affect both existing and new permit holders. Make sure you understand how the new rules apply to you.
As of 1st November 2026, if you are:
Applying for your third learner permit:
✔️ You must have sat and failed a driving test in the previous 2 years
Applying for your fourth learner permit:
✔️ You must have sat and failed a driving test in the previous 2 years
✔️ This permit will only be valid for one year
On your fourth or more learner permit:
✔️ You can no longer renew your learner permit and must begin the learning to drive process again:
1. Pass a Driver Theory Test in the category
2. Apply for new Learner Permit
3. Complete EDT* or IBT (16–18 hrs for motorbikes) before your next driving test - *Reduced EDT can only be availed of once - (All 12 lessons required if previously utilised)
📌All learner permit holders whose permit is expired for 2 years or more (on or after 1st November 2026) must also begin the learning to drive process again

For the Irish driving test (RSA), the biggest thing is showing the tester that you drive safely, legally, and independently rather than trying to drive perfectly.

🚗 Key tips
Mirrors — make them obvious
Check mirrors before changing speed, direction or position.
Use the correct sequence: mirror → signal → manoeuvre.
Don't just move your eyes; make your checks clear enough for the tester to see.
Observation at junctions
Approach slowly enough to properly assess the junction.
Look right, left, right before emerging where appropriate.
Don't assume you have priority.
Roundabouts
Choose the correct lane early.
Signal appropriately when entering/exiting.
Check mirrors and blind spots before changing lane.
Don't cut across lanes.
Speed
Stay within the limit, but don't automatically drive far below it.
Adjust speed for weather, pedestrians, cyclists, parked cars, bends and visibility.
Watch for changing speed limits.
Position
Keep good clearance from parked cars and cyclists.
Don't drift towards the centre of the road.
On narrow roads, demonstrate that you're prepared to slow/stop when necessary.

Moving off
Before moving:
mirrors → blind spot → signal if needed → move when safe.

Pay particular attention to cyclists, pedestrians and traffic approaching from behind.

Manoeuvres
For reversing around a corner, turnabout, etc., observation is usually more important than doing it quickly.
Move slowly.
Check all around repeatedly.
Stop if another road user approaches.
Don't mount the kerb.
Traffic lights
Know the meaning of all signals.
Don't rush an amber light.
At a stop line, stop in the correct position.
Pedestrians
Be particularly careful around crossings, schools, bus stops and people waiting near the kerb.
Give pedestrians adequate space and time.
Stay calm after a mistake
One mistake doesn't necessarily mean you've failed. Don't let one error cause another. Continue driving normally and safely.

On the morning of Saturday 12 September, the visit will primarily be concentrated in the Phoenix Park. In the afternoon of Saturday 12 September and during Sunday 13 September the visit will be concentrated in Co. Clare as President Trump attends the Amgen Irish Open 2026 at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel, Doonbeg.
This policing and security operation will be one of the biggest policing and security operations implemented by An Garda Síochána and we are working to ensure that the nature and scale of our operation continues to be proportionate to the need to protect everyone’s safety.
We ask members of the public to heed the advice and instructions of Gardaí and we thank them for their continuing co-operation.

🎒 As children return to school, every road user has a responsibility to help keep them safe.
Sean Canney TD, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, and Michael Rowland, Director of Research, Standards & Assurance at the RSA, are reminding motorists of their responsibility to protect children on our roads.
Children accounted for 5% of road fatalities and 8% of serious injuries over a five-year period, with seven in ten child casualties occurring on roads with speed limits of 60km/h or less.
Drivers should:
🚗 Slow down around schools
📵 Put away distractions
🚸 Stop when directed by a school warden
👀 Watch carefully for children walking and cycling
⏰ Allow extra time for journeys
Parents should ensure children are properly restrained in cars, wear helmets when cycling and understand how to make safe choices on their journey.
Never park on a footpath when dropping off or collecting children, as this can force pedestrians onto the road.
Together, we can make every journey to and from school safer.

🏍️ Look Right. Look Left. Look Right Again.
The RSA's motorcycle safety campaign is reminding motorists to take extra care at T-junctions, where more than one-third of serious motorcyclist injury collisions occur.
Welcoming the campaign, Assistant Commissioner Denis Ferry of An Garda Síochána urged motorists to be mindful of motorcyclists on our roads and to take the time to check carefully before pulling out at junctions.
A second look takes only a moment, but it could prevent a serious collision and save a life.

The RSA is pleased to announce continued strong progress in reducing waiting times for driving test invitations, as part of its ongoing Driving Test Action Plan.
As of this week, the average national waiting time to receive a driving test invitation has fallen to 14.4 weeks, well ahead of earlier projections.
