"The buzz of a racecourse and the excitement of race day really inspired me to pursue a career in racecourse management. I loved observing how much enjoyment people were getting from the experience, and I wanted to be part of creating that for others.

I wanted to manage a team that shared my passion for the sport, who cared about its future, and who wanted to help shape racing into something even better than it is today.

Having grown up around horses and with existing relationships across the racing industry, I saw an opportunity to leverage my experience and connections to make a real impact.

The equine world had always been a central part of my life. Combining that passion with a role where I could influence and improve the sport was the perfect fit for me.

My studies at university were fundamental in shaping my career. The Equine Science degree gave me a deep understanding of horse care, breeding, and management, which provided a strong foundation for working in the racing industry."

Bláithín Murphy, a graduate of UL's BSc in Equine Science and General Manager of Wincanton Racecourse in Somerset and The Jokey Club group in the United Kingdom.

Can you help? 🧐 One of our undergraduate final year students, Tunde Fekete, is currently undertaking a Final Year Project at the University of Limerick under the supervision of Dr. Nikki Walshe. The title of her proposed research is "Policy Influences on Equine Parasite Control: A Comparative Study of Veterinary Involvement in Australia, Germany, and Ireland". The purpose of this project is to explore how policies and veterinary involvement influence parasite control practices among horse owners, breeders and veterinarians in different countries (Australia, Ireland and Germany) in the sport horse sector.

As part of this study, Tunde would like to invite you to complete an online survey about your experiences and opinions on equine parasite control. See the link below:

Equine Science UL BSc Graduate Siobhán Schous recently graduated with an MSc in Mental Skills and Mental Health in Sports and Exercise. Read about her fabulous story and career below.

“I grew up surrounded by horses and my love of horses has motivated me through difficult times.

I was born without a bile duct and had the first of many surgeries as a young baby. The surgery saved my life, but I was left with significant hearing loss in both ears which was a side effect of the medication used in my treatment.

I did learn to sign, but I also learned to lip-read at a young age and have used that to communicate all my life.”

Living with a hearing impairment from an early age, Siobhán Schous, has learned to adapt and thrive in high-performance sport and education.

The international equestrian event rider from Kilmore, County Clare, was one of over 2,000 students graduating as part of UL’s Winter Conferring ceremonies, with an MSc in Mental Skills and Mental Health in Sports and Exercise.
