Equine Science UL recently delivered workshops at the Irish National Stud for Equine Collaboration for Health and Outreach (ECHO), a collective initiative dedicated to advancing equine health and welfare.

The September workshop, “Lost Principles, New Understandings” brought together equine professionals and enthusiasts to explore the evolving science behind health in the modern horse and pony.

Soraya Morscher, Assoc.Prof. Nikki Walshe, Assoc. Prof. Bridget Younge and Amy Fitzgerald shared knowledge across topics such as equine behaviour, gut health and microbiome, nutrition, equine body weight and body condition scoring.

We thoroughly enjoyed working with Teagasc, the Irish Equine Centre, Discover CAFRE, UCD Veterinary Hospital the and indeed all of those who attended on the day.

Demonstrations and workshops which gain insight into the horses' wellbeing exploring heart rate variability, behaviour and equine activity in small group sessions.

Over the summer, the Equine Science UL Team facilitated outreach workshops at Clonshire Equestrian Centre with Limerick Equine Academy – (Education and Therapeutic programme) and 5th and 6th Class Doon CBS Boys school. The activities integrated behaviour and ridden workshops underpinned with physiological data to gain additional insights into the status of equines. These workshops were made possible through the Equine Technical Support scheme, a Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine funded project titled ‘Investigation of Physiological and Biomechanical Training Responses in Sport Horses using Technology Enhanced Feedback – A Training and Competition Perspective’

The Equine Science UL Team will bring a workshop to Industry on 📈October 8th ⏰6pm – 8.30pm at Clonshire Equestrian Centre. This workshop is focused on providing insight to regular competition and training activities alongside real-time interaction with the horses using technology to help stakeholders decision making in training, management and breeding.

"The buzz of a racecourse and the excitement of race day really inspired me to pursue a career in racecourse management. I loved observing how much enjoyment people were getting from the experience, and I wanted to be part of creating that for others.

I wanted to manage a team that shared my passion for the sport, who cared about its future, and who wanted to help shape racing into something even better than it is today.

Having grown up around horses and with existing relationships across the racing industry, I saw an opportunity to leverage my experience and connections to make a real impact.

The equine world had always been a central part of my life. Combining that passion with a role where I could influence and improve the sport was the perfect fit for me.

My studies at university were fundamental in shaping my career. The Equine Science degree gave me a deep understanding of horse care, breeding, and management, which provided a strong foundation for working in the racing industry."
