🌿🧪 WEEK 4: Photosynthesis & Bonding!

We’re moving on to two really important Leaving Cert topics this week 👇

🌿 BIOLOGY – Photosynthesis
We’ll break down the process of photosynthesis, looking at the requirements for the process, the role of light, carbon dioxide and water, and the factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis. We’ll also practise applying the theory to exam-style questions.

🧪 CHEMISTRY – Ionic & Covalent Bonding
We’re getting into the fundamentals of chemical bonding — exploring how atoms bond, the difference between ionic and covalent bonding, and how bonding relates to the properties of different substances.

📚 As always, we’ll focus on understanding the concepts, building confidence and applying them to Leaving Cert questions.

🗓️ Classes start Monday 7th of September

🧬🧪 WEEK 3: Enzymes & Volumetric Analysis!

We’re getting stuck into two really important Leaving Cert topics this week 👇

🧬 BIOLOGY – Enzymes
We’ll look at how enzymes work, enzyme specificity, the active site, factors affecting enzyme activity and how to tackle enzyme experiments and exam questions.

🧪 CHEMISTRY – Volumetric Analysis: Acids & Bases
Time to put those mole and concentration skills to work! We’ll cover acid-base reactions, titrations, calculations, indicators and experimental technique — with plenty of practice along the way.

💡 The goal? Understand it → practise it → apply it to exam questions.

🧬🧪 WEEK 2: Let’s get stuck into some big Leaving Cert topics!

This week at Science Grinds Kilcullen, we’re moving on to:

🧬 BIOLOGY – Cell Division
We’ll explore the cell cycle, mitosis and its phases, DNA replication and meiosis — including why meiosis is so important for reproduction and variation. We’ll also look at how problems with cell division can lead to cancer.

🧪 CHEMISTRY – Concentration of Solutions
We’ll build on our understanding of the mole and learn how to work with concentrations, convert between units, calculate moles from concentration and volume, and tackle standard solutions and dilutions.

🗓️ Term 1 starts Monday 7th of September

📚 Week 1 is ready to go! 🧪🧬

Here’s what we’ll be covering in our first classes:

🧬 Leaving Cert Biology
We’ll kick off with Cell Structure – the foundation of the entire Biology course. We’ll cover:
🔹 Cell ultrastructure
🔹 The function of each organelle
🔹 Plant vs animal cells
🔹 Exam-style questions and common mistakes

🧪 Leaving Cert Chemistry
Our first topic is The Mole – one of the most important concepts in Chemistry. We’ll cover:
🔹 Relative atomic mass (Ar) and relative molecular mass (Mr)
🔹 The mole concept
🔹 Molar mass
🔹 Converting between moles, mass and particles
🔹 Plenty of worked examples and exam questions

August is your chance to get ahead—not catch up. 🚀

Every September, students promise themselves they’ll stay on top of Biology. By October, many are already feeling overwhelmed.

My weekly Leaving Cert Biology grinds are designed to make sure that doesn’t happen.

✔️ Clear, easy-to-understand explanations
✔️ Exam-focused notes and questions
✔️ Small class sizes with plenty of opportunities to ask questions
✔️ Build confidence from the very first topic instead of trying to relearn everything before the mocks.

If you’re starting 5th or 6th Year this September, now is the best time to secure your place before classes begin.

Ever get confused between % w/w, % w/v and % v/v? 🤯 You’re not alone!

These concentration calculations come up regularly in Leaving Cert Chemistry, but once you know what’s being measured, they’re much easier to remember.

In this reel, I explain:
🧪 % weight per weight (w/w)
💧 % weight per volume (w/v)
🥛 % volume per volume (v/v)

Save this reel for revision, and share it with a friend who’s tackling concentration calculations this year.

🧬 Mitosis doesn’t have to be confusing!

If you’re struggling to remember the stages of mitosis, this 30-second explanation breaks it down into simple steps.

Remember:
✔️ Mitosis produces 2 genetically identical daughter cells
✔️ It’s essential for growth, repair and cell replacement

💾 Save this Reel to come back to when you’re revising.

If you’re looking for extra support this year, my small group Leaving Cert Biology classes focus on understanding concepts, building confidence and improving exam performance.
