I spent an hour in the bank with my dad,
as he had to transfer some money. I couldn't resist
myself and asked...
''Dad, why don't we activate your internet banking?''
''Why would I do that?'' He asked...
''Well, then you wont have to spend an hour here for
things like making a transfer.
You can even do your shopping online. Everything will
be so easy!''
I was so excited about initiating him into the world of
Net banking.
He asked ''If I do that, I wont have to step out of the
house?”
''Yes, yes''! I said. I told him how even groceries can
be delivered at your door now and how amazon
delivers everything!
His answer left me tongue-tied.
He said ''Since I entered this bank today, I have met
four of my friends, I have chatted awhile with the staff
who know me very well by now.
You know, I am alone...this is the company that I need.
I like to get ready and come to the bank. I have
enough time, it is the physical touch that I crave.
Two years back, I got sick. The store owner from whom
I buy fruits, came to see me and sat by my bedside
and cried.
When your Mom fell down a few days back while on
her morning walk, our local grocer saw her and
immediately got his car to rush her home as he knows
where I live.
Would I have that 'human' touch if everything became
online?
Why would I want everything delivered to me and force
me to interact with just my computer?
I like to know the person that I'm dealing with and not
just the 'seller'. It creates bonds of Relationships.
Does Amazon deliver all this as well?'''

🌸Living in the present moment can seem like an overused phrase, especially on social media😉but why is it so relevant these days?
🌸Everyone worries, it's part of the human condition. It's important to allow and acknowledge how you feel but practicing mindfulness can help alleviate these worries.
🌸Concerns about the future are so understandable, especially given the context we are currently living in.
🌸If you are feeling overly anxious, one of the best things to do is reach out and talk to someone or write in a journal to help clarify your feelings.
🌸By practicing mindfulness, we are not ignoring anxious thoughts, we simply choose to acknowledge them and move on.

Prof Jim Lucey discussing mental health in Ireland and coping during a pandemic. Data shows that only 6% of Ireland's health budget is dedicated to mental health which is shocking. In 2018, pre Covid, €17 billion of state money was spent on health care, however only 0.8 bn was spent on mental health. These figures are staggering, something needs to be done to address this serious issue.

There's no doubt that the Covid crisis has had a significant impact on people's mental health and when Professor Jim Lucey went looking for a way to help those suffering, his brother gave him the advice to write his own book 'A Whole New Plan for Living'. If you're feeling a bit overwhelmed, try this short meditation.
🌸Just stop what you're doing.
🌸Inhale for 5 seconds, pause and exhale for 7 seconds. Do this for as long as is necessary.
🌸Pay attention to how you feel in your body. What emotions come up for you?
🌸What is it that you need right now? Rest, alone time, exercise?

🌻I'm only about half way through Louise Shanagher's Mindfulness training and have to say I'm loving it so far.
🌻I'm particularly interested in neuroplasticity and the changes that occur in the brain when mindfulness is practiced
🌻There are only a few of the many benefits associated with mindfulness. Others include, reduced stress and anxiety, overall sense of happiness and well being etc. What's not to like, give it a go 😊
