We stand in solidarity with the people of the Sperrins fighting a toxic gold mine in their mountains. While they fight Dalradian, the Canadian mining company threatening their land, in a faulty Public Inquiry process, we disrupted the Irish Association of Economic Geology’s conference on Precious Metals in Waterford, attended by Dalradian executives among others.

Before the protest, the Dalradian speaker was removed from the online schedule. Activists interrupted the conference’s general opening speech with criticism of mining and Dalradian. Others picketed outside, speaking to passers-by and conference attendees about the dangers of toxic mining and the threat to the Sperrins.

Threats from the mine would include:

A waste dump 17 storeys high that would release dust into the air, contaminating the environment24 heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury and lead leaked into local water sourcesTwo explosions a day, 365 days a year for 20 years74 acres of peatland removed for the mine, destroying carbon capture and biodiversityHalf a million gallons of water taken from the bog daily3.5 million litres of diesel will be used on the mine site annuallyThe Sperrins are an area of outstanding natural beauty, not a toxic industrial site!

On Friday 22nd of May, members of CATU, Slí Eile and Teach Torthai gathered outside the Greek embassy in Dublin in solidarity with the squatted community of Prosfygika, currently resisting attempts at the neighbourhood’s destruction by the Greek state.

One representative of the demonstration was received by the Greek ambassador in a private interview, where he was presented with a memorandum signed by the groups of the coalition. This is a small contribution to growing international movement putting pressure on the Greek state to stop the eviction, continuing with a delegation to the European parliament on the 2-4th of June.

This Sunday the 31st of June at 7pm a fundraiser gig will also be held in Teach Torthaí, in Dublin city centre, to raise funds for Prosfygika, as well as for a squatted social centre in Dublin. DM for address!

On Friday, 22 May at 12:30, members of the Community Action Tenants Union, Teach Torthai and Slí Eile will come together in front of the Greek Embassy on Pembroke St. in Dublin 2 in solidarity with the residents of the Community of Squatted Prosfigyka who are resisting destruction at the hands of the Greek state.

Housing a neighbourhood of 400 people for the last 16 years, Prosfigyka is the largest initiative of radical self-organisation in Greece, and one of the biggest squats in Europe. They have established 22 autonomous social structures to meet the needs of the neighbourhood and wider area, including a daycare centre, communal pharmacy, bakery, autonomous women’s structure and much more. The neighbourhood has also acted as a vital base for the development of an international movement against the global violence of capital, state and patriarchy.

Since 2025, the Greek state is seeking once again to destroy the community and to hand over the historic neighbourhood to political and business interests. Local authorities, along with the Greek Ministry of Culture, have signed a gentrification plan which will completely transform the area and displace 400 people in the process.

The residents are currently fighting collectively on multiple levels against the violent implementation of the plan. At the forefront of this struggle are Aristotelis Chantzis and Suzon Doppagnes’s hunger strikes until death, putting their lives on the line for the defence of the community and its political proposal.

This Friday, shortly after the anniversary of Bobby Sands’s death as a result of his own hunger strike in 1981, we will gather at the Greek Embassy and express our solidarity with our Greek comrades, a solidarity that is deepened by the resonances of this fight with our island’s ongoing struggle for freedom.

We will raise our voices in tandem with other solidarity actions across the world, all a part of mounting global dissent with the violence of capital and its interests against human autonomy and the right to housing.

Resistance is our common language! Save Prosfigyka!

International call out for the defence of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika!

The Greek government is threatening to demolish this self-organised space for the purpose of “redevelopment.” Two people are currently on hunger strike, with more to follow, and an international campaign to put pressure on the Greek State and the EU is underway.

“No inch of land for the criminal state and capital, we will struggle until victory!”

The three central demands:

- Immediate cancellation of the contract by the Region of Attica

- All residents of Prosfygika to remain in their homes, in the place and area where they live and have established social, cultural, and organical ties

- Concrete guarantees to be given for the restoration of Prosfygika by the non-profit civil law company “Residents and friends of Prosfygika L. Alexandras non profit civil law company” with its own self-financing – no public funds for the ‘redevelopment’ of Prosfygika

What you can do:

Take action and support the struggle of Prosfygika on an international level! Just as the struggle for community is a unifying struggle across diverse societies, victory will not only be the communities, but connected to all our struggles, both local and international.

Therefore we need everybody to organise and participate in:

- interventions at the Europe Day 2026, taking place 9th of May in different countries (https://europeday.eu/agenda/)
- Gatherings in front of Greek missions in every possible locality (embassies and consulates)
- Solidarity hunger strikes
- Digital and postcard spamming action
- To hand over memorandums to ambassadors
- Collecting signatures for the support of the demands
- Inviting public figures, journalists, artists in their local context to the gatherings
