Rookie Mate
Best Friend of International Students – Helping you settle, study & succeed abroad.
100 Mates. 100 Dreams. 1 Global Family. 🌍✨
On 03 Jan 2026, we hit a milestone that means the world to me. In just 2 short months, 100 of you have joined the Rookie Mate family! 🥳
To some, it’s just a number. But to me, it’s 100 brave students who are packing their lives into suitcases, leaving their families behind, and chasing a future in a new land. ✈️🧳
I started this channel because I know the "Truth"—moving abroad is exciting, but it’s also scary, lonely, and overwhelming. Seeing 100 of you trust me to be your guide is an emotion I can’t quite put into words. ❤️
Whether you are heading to Europe, North America, Asia, or anywhere in between—thank you for letting me be a part of your journey from the very beginning. We are just getting started! 🚀
No matter where you land, remember: You are never a "Rookie" when you have a Mate. 🤝
Help us grow to the next 500! If you haven't joined the crew yet, click the link in my first comment and subscribe. Let's conquer the world together! 🌍🎓

🌍 The Rookie Mate Story: Why I Built Your New Best Friend
Hello, future globetrotters, brave adventurers, and fellow students! 👋
I'm so excited to finally start Rookie Mate and the best place to start is by telling you why this community exists.
The truth is, I was once a rookie, just like you. In 2018, I packed my bags, my dreams, and a whole lot of nervousness, and moved to Ireland to start my master's degree.
I won't tell you my journey was a terrible experience—it wasn't. I truly enjoyed my time to the fullest! But I will tell you this: it was not easy.
**The Challenges No One Teaches You**
The hardest part of being an international student is that you start your life over in a totally unknown country. Imagine this:
There's no family — no mom or dad — to rush over in an emergency...
Your siblings can't instantly run to your side to be your power guard when you need them most....
Everyone is a stranger, and the systems are new....
My international friends and I faced so many challenges that had nothing to do with textbooks: How long would it take to get my GNIB card (now IRP)? How much money do I actually need to bring to survive the first few months until I find a part-time job? Even simple things like missing my country, my native language (Sinhala), and my family back home hit hard every single day.
**The Missing Piece**
When it comes to academic knowledge, we’re fine. Universities and colleges provide guidance, and the internet is full of videos, books, and courses.
But when it came to surviving, to navigating the day-to-day realities of settling in a new land, there was a huge gap. No book, no video, and no program gave us a single tip on how to handle these real-life challenges.
**WHY ROOKIE MATE???
I created Rookie Mate because I don’t want to see another student go through that same struggle alone.
The mission is simple: To be the Best Friend of International Students.
