As requested by James Horan:
The actuarial classes of DCU and UCD met last night in UCD in one of the year's most eagerly anticipated matches. This, however, was more than just a match. It was a matter of pride and the DCU team left with their heads held high after a fine victory over their hosts.
The kick-off was delayed some 10 minutes - due to the lack of punctuality of some of the DCU players - but the match began as a 9-a-side game, with 7 lads and 2 girls lining out for each team. Representing DCU were: Laura Behan, Laura White, Abdusalam Abubakr, Sean Collins, Des Daly, Tom Feeney, Mark Hardy, Neil Harte and Aaron Kenny.
The hosts dominated possession early on, with DCU struggling to get a foothold in the game. However, they could not make their possession count and, despite a number of attempts, failed to trouble the DCU goalkeeper.
Following the late arrivals of James Hazlett and Stephen Tier, the match became an 11-a-side with both teams struggling to cope with the lack of space on the pitch.
DCU rode their luck on occasion before scoring against the run of play and with one of their first decent attacks. Mark Hardy showed us once again why he is the best player in the world today and UCD had no answer for him. Winning the ball on the edge of his own penalty area, Hardy drove straight at the UCD defence, beating six players before flicking the ball up and timing a perfect overhead kick past the helpless UCD goalkeeper. (Note: Mark Hardy had no input whatsoever into the compiling of this match report). 1-0 to the visitors.
Shortly after the DCU goal, Aaron Kenny almost doubled the lead but, unfortunately, his left-footed drive rebounded off the post.
UCD created a number of chances of their own but could not find the back of the DCU net. The visitors defended resolutely and made some fine blocks, interceptions and saves.
Eventually, tempers began to rise. UCD were not too fond of Feeney's roughhouse tactics and lack of space began to tell. Both teams agreed that a 7-a-side game would be more sensible.
The Lauras decided that they didn't want to play any further part in the match and Collins and Hazlett decided that they needed a rest and so the remaining 7 stayed on the pitch.
Both teams had difficulty creating clear-cut opportunities after the break until ,eventually, Tier was called into action in the DCU goal, making a fine save with his crown jewels. Ouch!!
Following this piece of action, the game had to be moved to an adjacent pitch. Abubakr decided to call it a day and bid farewell to his teammates, leaving it an even 8-a-side match.
UCD began to exert even more pressure on the DCU goal and Harte was forced into a number of saves, 2 of which caused Kenny to praise his "karate reflexes." But it was the visitors who managed to put the ball in the UCD net, again against the run of play.
Feeney played a super ball through to Collins, who found himself in acres of space. Collins turned and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner. Great finish - his celebration needs work though. 2-0 DCU.
The northsiders almost tripled their lead moments later, when Kenny provided a Leighton Baines-like cross, which Feeney -at full stretch- directed over the crossbar when he probably should've stuck his head on it.
UCD came close again following a mix-up in the DCU defence. Fortunately for DCU, their shot rebounded back off the crossbar.
The game was eventually put to bed minutes later when Mark Hardy scored his second of the evening. Feeney again provided the assist and Hardy rolled the ball into the bottom corner. Game, set and match.
All of the DCU players proved their worth and contributed to a fine team performance. Feeney was as solid as they come at the heart of the defence, Hazlett (despite the wonky headers) and Abubakr ensured little got by them. Tier put his body on the line when needed and also put in a great performance. Daly was always a handful for the UCD defence with his physicality and his Pirlo-esque passing. Kenny was a real live-wire down the left flank for the visitors and also defended extremely well. Collins and Hardy got the goals and also helped to relieve the pressure on DCU on numerous occasions. The two Lauras also got stuck in and made their presence felt.
It was certainly a solid performance all round and a deserved victory for the visitors. Hopefully, they can repeat that success in the return leg in DCU
