Exciting News 🌟 We're thrilled to welcome Dr. Rowland Imperial to our academic community as the new tenure-track Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics (TESOL) at the Centre for Language and Communication Studies. 📚 With a recent DPhil in Education from the University of Oxford, Dr. Imperial brings a background in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, and the sociology and philosophy of education. His research, deeply influenced by Latin American philosophy of liberation and decoloniality thinking, aims to forge a “critical-ethical politics” in English language education. Colm joined The People Group in 2003, having spent the previous 6 years helping to establish MBNA Bank (AvantCard) in Ireland and leading their Business Development efforts. Over the past 16 years, Colm has concentrated on middle to senior-level recruitment projects in the Sales, Marketing and Commercial disciplines. He took the reins of The People Group as Managing Director in 2009, having successfully completed an MBO of the firm that year. Colm holds a postgraduate qualification in Marketing and is also a qualified Business, Executive & Personal coach.

Having finished her MSc. in Applied Psychology from Trinity College, Emma's first job took her to London, where she worked for an IT & Tech Recruitment agency. After 5 years in London (and numerous calls with ThePeople Group), Emma made her return to Ireland to join the firm in 2017. Since joining, Emma has worked with candidates at all levels, from those seeking their first move to senior, more experienced hires, and she equally loves helping businesses achieve their growth ambitions.

Antony J. Chan was recently appointed Head of Development at The Chester Beatty. As a seasoned arts administrator with experience spanning programme management, sponsorship, marketing, and grant scheme management, he brings a genuine and diverse passion for the arts and culture.

Antony is committed to making changes and contributions through the arts and creativity, creating mutual understanding and benefits for all.

A Hong Kong native, he was educated in Hong Kong, Canada and the UK and is bilingual in English and Chinese.

Translating Europe Workshop: “What will the language professional of tomorrow do?”

Language technology plays an increasingly important role in the multilingual European societies we live in, a development that affects the entire language sector. Will the language specialist therefore be replaced by the data scientist or will expert knowledge of languages stay a key competence on the job market?

In cooperation with Drongo, the translation service of the European Commission is organising a panel discussion between trainers, students, companies, researchers and language professionals about the job market for language experts. The discussion will take place on the occasion of our publication of OTTO: an inventory of training programmes in the field of language and technology in the Netherlands and Belgium. The inventory will also be presented during the online event.

Speakers include Nikola Kunte (EMT), Iulianna van der Lek – Ciudin (Clarin Eric/Upskills), Patrick Goethals (University of Ghent), Margreet Dorleijn (literary translator), Dennis Lindberg (Tilburg University), Tom Vanallemeersch (CrossLang, Ghent), Jourik Ciesielski (Yamagata Europe), Maaike Verrips (Drongo), Dries Debackere (De Taalsector). The discussion will be moderated by Emma Hartkamp (European Commission).

This event is of interest to trainers, students, employers in the language industry, buyers of language services, and future and experienced language professionals.

With OTTO and with this event, we aim to contribute to the vitality of the language industry, the attractiveness of this sector for young talents and a better insight into the job market for language specialists.
